We offer trial period for all our dogs. If they don't work out, we want you to bring them back to us and we will find a dog for you that does fit into your family..

Representative Dogs That May Be Available For Adoption

GGLRR typically may have between 5 and 10 Labrador Retrievers available for adoption. In some cases, we have not taken possession of the dog as it may be under the control of another animal welfare organization (e.g., SPCA, Humane Society, etc.). We cooperate with Northern California agencies whenever possible...

The list of available dogs described below is representative of the Labradors we have (or are assisting with other organizations) at any time. The list is not all encompassing, not necessarily current, and some of the dogs may already have been adopted.

Our current list of Labrador Retrievers available for adoption is provided only to prospective owners who have been pre-screened by us. An explanation of the adoption procedure is contained on the "How We Work" page. The only way to adopt a Labrador Retriever through GGLRR is to contact and speak with our Rescue Representative nearest to your home, and complete the necessary adoption paperwork. Only when you have completed this process and have been accepted into Dogs Available our Adoption Program will you begin to receive the current list of Labs Available For Adoption..

Please read our adoption policies.

Cody 7 year old Yellow Neutered Male Lab 80 lbs Cody was surrendered by his previous owner to the Vacaville Shelter  due to a home foreclosure.  It must have been heartbreaking for this  family to leave behind such a wonderful dog.  He is incredibly  loving/affectionate, sweet and VERY happy.  When lab rescue met him, it was love at first site.  He is ALL Lab in so many respects.  He is  goofy - especially when you rub his back, he makes pleasurable  groaning noises!  He LOVES riding in the car, playing fetch, being in  the water, going for walks or just hanging out with his person.  He is  the perfect combination of high energy (when you want him to be - out on walks, playing ball, etc.), but will also be calm by your side in  the house.  He also will quietly sleep in his bed until you decide  it's time to get up in the morning.  He doesn't mind long, lazy Sunday  morning sleep-ins!  He's completely housebroken - he will go to the  front door to let you know that he has to "go".  He's also very quiet - he's not a barker.   Now, here's the bad news. When we pulled Cody from the shelter, we noticed a lump on his back right leg.  We asked our vet to test it (she didn't think it was necessary because she suspected  it was a lipoma - fatty benign tumor). Unfortunately, the lab results showed that it was a mast cell tumor  (cancer).  Shortly thereafter, we found another tumor on his left  side.  We had the two tumors removed and thought he would be cancer-  free. Unfortunately, this was not the case. Subsequently, his foster  found two more tumors.  We took Cody to the oncologist and based on  the location of the two other tumors, it didn't make sense to remove  them.  This news absolutely broke our hearts.  The good news is, Cody  has no idea what is going on.  He feels great, has lots of energy and  is happier than ever.  He deserves to continue to live out the rest of his  time (our best guess is 1-2 year) happily.  Consequently, we are looking for a  loving, compassionate individual/family that will give Cody a  wonderful home while we still have his beautiful spirit on this  planet. If you are this exceptional individual, please call Donna at  415-531-9368.

1/4/09 We have a terrific update for Cimba...She had an ultrasound of her heart and there were no adult heartworms ... so her prognosis is much better. She will need 2 injections given one month apart and will need to be confined with only hand walking for potty breaks during her convalescence. She is handling this treatment period very well as she is a very quiet and sweet girl. She is in a wonderful foster home but Lab Rescue would always prefer for Cimba to be placed in her permanent home. Her exercise demands are very limited but after healing... she will recover to a very happy, active and loving lab. If you would like more information on Cimba... please call Robin at (530) 448 4811.

1/1/09 Cimba 5 yr old Black Female (spayed) Lab... has come up strongly positive for heartworm. She was just moved to a foster home today and will start her treatment protocol.... Wish her luck for a full recovery.

Buddy: If you are looking for a smart, loyal, energetic companion, look no more!  I am an adorable, male, 6-month, neutered, old black lab/mix.  I weigh about 45 lbs now and will grow to about 70 lbs. max.  I have had all of my shots, I am house broken, crate trained, know all basic obedience commands, and I get along with other dogs once I get to know them.  I can do without cats though.  I am a great walking companion, but I still need some reminding about who is walking whom.  I see the world through puppy eyes and I would love to share my puppy experiences with my new people.  Buddy is the son of Rosie, the yellow female Lab we have available for adoption. If you are an adult, or family with older children, won’t you please consider making your home my forever home?  I am currently living in Lafayette, CA. about 30 minutes east of San Francisco.  If you are interested in adopting me, please call Holly at (650) 322-9888.

Toby 5 year old neutered male black lab mix 100lbs. Toby’s owner is heartbroken to give him up, but she isn’t able to give him the time and attention he deserves.  Due to divorce and a new job out of state, she feels the best for Toby is to find him a new home.  She has had him since he was 8 weeks old.  He is a very sweet and loving dog.  He is housebroken, spending his days inside or outside, but sleeps inside onhis bed at night.  He is great with other dogs, and children, but would do better in a home with children over 10 because of his size.  He is unknown with cats.  He will come when called, walks on a leash with pulling, knows sit, stay, down, and stop.  He likes to ride in cars and loves to swim in open water, but is afraid of pools.  He loves to go on “hops” and loves his Kong!  Toby is very healthy, but he lost his front left leg after being hit by a car in March of 2007.  But, it hasn’t slowed him down.  He is current on his vaccinations and is taking Heartguard heartworm preventative medication.  If you are interested in this sweet boy, please call Holly at (650) 322-9888.  Toby is located in San Mateo.

Ojo 6 years young purebred spayed black female Lab Ojo’s owners have had her since she was a puppy, but with two small children, Ojo isn’t getting the time and attention she deserves.  She is an extremely friendly (loves giving kisses), active, loving lab.  She is great with people, dogs and children (currently living with 3 & 6 year olds), but since she doesn’t know her own size she may knock over a small child.  She is unknown with cats.  She is housebroken, but sleeps in the garage at night.  Rescue would like her to be part of the family and allowed to sleep inside the house at night.  She comes when called, knows sit, stay, down, heel and fetch.  She likes to ride in cars and loves to swim.  Ojo is current on her vaccinations.  If you are interested in adopting Ojo, please call Holly at (650) 322-9888.  Ojo is located in Pittsburg.

Hannah 2-3 year old yellow female lab 60lbs. Hannah and her 11 puppies (already adopted) were rescued from a shelter in Texas where they would have met certain death if Rescue had not intervened.  She is a sweet, friendly girl, who gets along well with all dogs and people.  Hannah did test positive for heartworm.  Her condition is easily treated, but for the first 6 weeks as part of her treatment, her exercise will need to be kept to a minimum.  She will also need to be spayed once her heartworm treatment is completed.  Rescue will help with the cost of her spay.  Hannah is up to date on her vaccinations.  If you are interested in adopting this beautiful girl, please call Holly at (650) 322-9888.  Hannah will be flying to California within the next two weeks.

Rosie 3-4 year old spayed Chocolate female Lab 60lbs Rosie and her puppies (already adopted) were rescued from a Shelter in Texas where they would have been euthanized had Rescue not stepped in.  She is a very sweet, mellow girl.  Her foster absolutely adores her.  She is housebroken and gets along well with other dogs.  She was treated for heartworm and is fully recovered and ready to fly to California to live the good life.  Rosie is current on her vaccinations and is heartworm negative.  If you are interested in adopting this wonderful lab, please call Holly at (650) 322-9888.

Riley 2 year old (soon to be spayed) black female Lab 55lbs.Riley was rescued from a local shelter where she was scheduled to be euthanized due to overcrowding.  She is currently being fostered by a family with two young children and two older labs.  She is a bit shy at first, but loves attention and snuggling.  She still needs training, but is eager to please and a quick learner.  She sleeps through the night in her crate.  She enjoys being around people, so we don’t think she would do well in a home if her owner is gone all day.  She is current on her vaccinations.  If you are interested in adopting Riley, please contact Holly at (650) 322-9888.  Riley is located in Redwood City.

1/4/09 Raider is on trial in his new home.

Raider... 8 yr old Black Female-spayed English Labrador about 55lbs. Raider's owner contacted Lab Rescue since losing their home in Reno, Nevada... she was destined for the local shelter and they hoped that she would have a better option. When i met a family member for her surrender... she had her treasured toy stuffed in her mouth for security...but clearly was sad and confused about what has been happening to her. She has been relegated to the backyard of the house that her family had lost... with someone going over every few days to provide food and water for her. Amazingly she is doing very well at the kennel in Reno... and is doing beautifully with all the staff and the other dogs. She is very quiet and gentle, walks reasonably well on leash but has not had much leash training. She will come when called, sit and is very voice responsive. She is extremely willing to please...and is just so happy to have any attention. She has lived with other dogs (her small dog buddy was allowed at the new apartment) and apparently had two cats who were outdoor cats too (do not know how she would be with cats in the home however). Despite being an outdoor dog she is in very good condition and her coat is very soft and shiny. She is apparently house trained and because she is so quiet and gentle... she should be just fine with families with small children. Being and older girl, daily walks would be great... but she would not be suitable for runs or heavy exercise demands. She does really love her stuffed toys... so as long as she has those... she should be very happy! Raider is vaccinated for everything, is dewormed, will be microchipped and heartworm tested. She is located at a kennel in Reno, Nevada... but part way transportation is always available. For more information on this really sweet girl please call Lab Rescue Rep Robin at (530) 448 4811

1/4/09 Shadow is on trial in his new home.

Shadow 3 yr old AKC registered Black Male (neutered) English Labrador 85lbs... I met with the family who had to surrender Shadow because not only had they lost their home and business but were forced to give up their pets as well. I can tell you that Shadow's mom was incredibly sad in saying goodbye...and would love to hear that he has been placed in a wonderful new home. He is an incredibly sweet and gentle soul... absolutely no agression and he is also very respectful with people and all other dogs. He is a very quiet guy... but has been very well loved and really deserves a new home where he will get a lot of attention. He does have some training... he will walk quite well on leash...will sit and will want to go where ever you go. He has been crate trained and does very well in the car.. but he would really love a new home where he could be a part of the family and have an active lifestyle. He is very attentive and sweet... takes treats very gently... and though he is a good sized guy... (he could lose about 10 lbs)... he should do beautifully with a family even with young children. He was just brought up to date on vaccines, will be microchipped and will be heartworm tested 1/2/09. He is just a beautiful and sweet guy... any family would be so lucky to adopt him. For more information on Shadow... please call Robin at (530) 448 4811. Shadow is boarded at a kennel in Reno, Nevada but part way transportation is available.

1/4/09   Chloe 3-4 mo Yellow Female (just spayed) Labrador (might have a touch of pointer in her due to her fine nose but her coloring and conformation is all lab) 22lbs. Little Chloe came in to the Silver Springs Shelter (rural Nevada) just before Christmas.... and was available on 12/31... but knowing that this shelter has very limited kennel space and they were almost full with the coming weekend... Chloe would have been euthanized had Lab rescue not gone to the shelter to pick her up. She is as cute as a bug and exuberantly happy (she was not aware of the danger that she was in). She is most likely all lab... but the region she was abandoned in is a big hunting area and there are a lot of American Hunting labs (taller, thinner and more narrow faces) that tend to come from this region. I think that she will be a smaller girl probably maturing to about 55lbs (She might have even been the runt of the litter... but don't tell her that!! She is absolutely loving life!!). She will snuggle with you when you hold her (but that will last only so long once she is bigger)... but when she has "four on the floor"... she is all exuberance and happiness. She has a very charismatic personality.... makes eye contact while she is madly wagging her tail and attracts everyone's attention when she enters the room. She appears to be very vigorous and healthy, was just spayed, vaccinated (except for rabies), dewormed and is looking forward to bringing a great deal of happiness and joy to her new home. She has not had any training (obedience or house)... and certainly crate training a this dynamo is a great idea. Because she is very active and has had no training... placing her in a home with older children would be best.... but she is a smart and loving little girl... and should be easy to work with. She is boarded at a kennel in Reno, Nevada (which is 3 1/2 hrs from San Francisco)...part way transportation is a possibility. For more information on this little cutie... please call Robin at (530) 448 4811.

Ellie 3 mo old Black Female (spay 1/5/09) Labrador.. (might have a slight mix) about 20lbs. Little Ellie was just pulled from the Fallon, Nevada shelter .. also a rural shelter with very limited space (only 10 kennels)... and anytime a lab has been available for a couple of days... and the shelter is starting to get full... Lab rescue will pull those dogs if they are adoptable. These rural areas get very few adoptions...and luckily Ellie will find a wonderful home through labrescue. She is just 3 months of age... very healthy and very exuberant and will probably grow to about 55-60lbs.. She does actually walk quite well on a leash.. but at the shelter... she was very afraid with all those other barking dogs.. so she was staying close to the ground as we went through the hallway. Once brought to the kennel in Reno... she is basking in the love and attention... and is very happy and tail wagging. She in fact loves to snuggle... and kept kissing Adam who was trying to hold her for her photo!! She does have a little bit of white on her chest... and a dot of white under her chin... and on the very tips of several paws... but her conformation is lab.. and her face is just adorable. She is scheduled to be spayed monday (1/5/09) and was vaccinated and dewormed 1/3/09. Little Ellie is boarded at a kennel in Reno, Nevada which is about 3 1/2 hours from San Francisco... but part way transportation is a possibility. For more information on this very sweet little girl... please call Robin at (530) 448 4811.

Logan 2 year old (soon to be neutered) purebred chocolate male Lab   76lbs. Logan was rescued from a local shelter where he was scheduled to be euthanized due to overcrowding.  He is quite a handsome boy!  He definitely loves attention and thinks that he is a lap dog.  He know sit, down, shake, speak and we are sure a few other commands.  He takes treats very gently.  He does get excited when he sees other dogs when on lead, so he could use a refresher course on leash etiquette.  He still shows some puppy exuberance by jumping up to give you kisses, so he may be too large for a family with small children.  He would do well with an active family that are experienced dog owners that can provide daily exercise and lots of attention.  Logan is healthy and current on his vaccinations.  If you are interested in this gorgeous boy, please call Holly at (650) 322-9888.  Logan is located in Menlo Park.

 Labrador available through other agencies

Whenever possible, Lab Rescue (GGLRR) will  list Labradors that are available through other San Francisco bay area animal shelters, other rescue organizations and individual rescuers.  If you know of a Labrador that is need of a home that is available through an organization such as these, please email us at doghouse@labrescue.org and we will post the information. The organizations below are not part of Golden Gate Labrador Rescue, Inc. We provide this listing service as a courtesy only. If you are interested in any of the dogs listed below you should contact these agencies directly.

We have had tremendous success helping the local shelters and rescue groups place Labs and Lab mixes directly from the shelters. Because of this success, many of the shelters now keep dogs longer because they know they have an improved chance of placing these dogs. If you should adopt one of the dogs listed through one of the organizations below, please email doghouse@labrescue.org so we can keep our site as up to date as possible. It is updated daily and some times updated several times during the day as we receive updates from our volunteers and the general public. Thanks, Lab Rescue.

 Labradors available from Individuals

Jibby is a black & white Labrador retriever mix that looks like he has white socks on.  He loves to play ball and has a sweet temperament. Jibby is motivated by treats so he is a good candidate for training! He already knows "sit" and is working on other commands with the shelter volunteers.  He was a favorite at the shelter and was there since November 14, 2008.  His owner could not afford to bail him out and he kept calling lab rescue.  He also didn't want him back.  Lab rescue got a call from a volunteer at Sacramento County Shelter offering to sponsor him if we could find him a foster home and we did.  Jibby deserves a new home where some body will love him and let him be part of their family.  Jibby is in a foster home in Sacramento.  Please call Charlene Wolfe at 916-689-6131.  Tell them Lab Rescue sent you. 12/21/08

Marcus is a beautiful senior boy! He is a 8-year-old purebred chocolate Labrador retriever. He is playful, does well with other dogs, but will need to be introduced to kitties slowly. Being a lab, he is very food motivated and wants to please. Marcus has been neutered, is vaccinated and microchipped. He has been heartworm tested and is negative. The adoption fee is $125.00, but be sure to ask about the High Sierra Animal Rescue Seniors-for-Seniors program if you are over 65 years old. For more information on Marcus please visit the High Sierra Animal Rescue website at www.highsierraanimalrescue.org or call 530 832 4727. Tell them Lab Rescue sent you. 12/24/08

1/4/09  Baxter came to me for training.  This gorgeous dog was born in August of 08.  He has been neutered, has all of his shots.  He has stopped jumping, does not chew, no barking, and is still working on his walking to heal.  We have a special training collar that I use on most of my big dogs I train and it is wonderful.  As he walks he still needs some polishing up on looking up at whoever is walking him.  He sits and stays.  His retrieving is awesome!  Fast as the wind and comes right back and we are able to say drop and he releases the ball into our hands.  Baxter needs a home where there are adults only. He needs to be walked or run each day and played with, no if, ands, or buts.  He will begin to get into trouble if he is not stimulated every day.  I am a Bark Buster Trainer and this dog comes with the life of the dog guarantee customer support.  This means a trainer will come out for free for the rest of this dogs life to help with training. (Bark Busters is worldwide, but if you live out in the boonies a trainer may not be available.)  The lady who has had this dog has paid for the training. She would love to keep this dog but her sons are on their way to college and only she is left to take care of him.  She is so tiny and she does not have the strength to handle this dog.

Baxter will love you back for all the good you give him.  He will bring a smile to your face daily and what more could a person want.  It is a good feeling.

Hello I am Jerrico. Yep, you have seen me here on Lab Rescue before. If you look on this site you probably thought I got adopted, BUT I did not. I am still at the shelter. I have been here since Oct 10th. Why is this . I am a young guy who is just under a year old, I am happy and friendly. Is it because I have black fur? Maybe. Please consider coming to adopt me. I am neutered and ready to go home. My shelter is just two hours from the Bay Area, in Ukiah. Please email my friend Sage at mountais@co.mendocino.ca.us or call 707-467-6453 12/29/08  I have been neutered, my heartworm test is negative and now I can go home with you! 1/4/09   Hello I am Duke. I am a purebred Yellow Lab. I was brought the Ukiah Shelter with a bad leg. I was purchased about a year ago as a puppy. But the people who bought me had no money to fix my leg, so they just gave me to the shelter. Luckily I ended up at the Ukiah Shelter where dogs with problems like mine are in no danger. Today I got my leg fixed and I was neutered, so I can go home. The shelter vet will be glad to talk with you to explain how he fixed my leg. I am a happy guy. Please come to meet me. To learn how to do that email my friend Sage at mountais@co.mendocino.ca.us or call her at 707-467-6453 Tell them Lab Rescue sent you. 12/29/08

He gets along with other dogs, loves attention and belly rubs.  Duncan is crate trained and he only barks if someone gets close to his house. Gus is a 3 1/2-year-old neutered male Black Labrador Retriever/Deerhound mix who is 60 pounds.  He is quite simply a dear, really great dog! He is happy, friendly, sweet, outgoing, responsive, athletic, and darn good-looking. One of those dogs who seems to "have it all." He has so far been great with children and cats. Gus is quite people-affectionate. He likes to give hugs with his long, elegant legs! It was quite a sight tonight watching him sail around the yard with a ropetoy in his mouth, 3 dogs in hot pursuit! He is housebroken and learning about crating.  He sits at street corners and doesn’t jump or run up to passers-by. Like most young dogs, he has his moments of excitability but he corrects well. Gus is a very kind, sweet, and joyful dog! Tell them Lab Rescue sent you. 12/28/08
