We offer trial period for all our dogs. If they don't work out, we want you to bring them back to us and we will find a dog for you that does fit into your family.. |
GGLRR typically may have between 5 and 10 Labrador Retrievers available for adoption. In some cases, we have not taken possession of the dog as it may be under the control of another animal welfare organization (e.g., SPCA, Humane Society, etc.). We cooperate with Northern California agencies whenever possible...
The list of available dogs described below is representative of the Labradors we have (or are assisting with other organizations) at any time. The list is not all encompassing, not necessarily current, and some of the dogs may already have been adopted.
Our current list of Labrador Retrievers available for adoption is provided only to prospective owners who have been pre-screened by us. An explanation of the adoption procedure is contained on the "How We Work" page. The only way to adopt a Labrador Retriever through GGLRR is to contact and speak with our Rescue Representative nearest to your home, and complete the necessary adoption paperwork. Only when you have completed this process and have been accepted into Dogs Available our Adoption Program will you begin to receive the current list of Labs Available For Adoption..
Please read our adoption policies.

I
adopted Honey Bear from the Mendocino shelter a couple of weeks ago, he was
found wandering on the beach in Ft Bragg. (I volunteer for Lab Rescue.) He is a
12-13 year old lab / golden retriever mix and in decent health. (I took him to
the Vet and he is in good health – the only issue would be that he needs to have
his teeth cleaned, his back end is a little weak and he has an ear infection –
which we treated him. He weighs 55 pounds and can put on about 10 pounds.) I
wanted to give him a nice home for the last years of his life. I brought Honey
Bear home and he does not get along with my dogs. He is a very sweet nice dog
who loves to be with people but he wants to be the top dog and my dogs do not
want to give that up. He loves to be outside, go for walks and play. I would
recommend that he finds a home that has no other pets and has an outside yard he
can play in. He needs to be part of the house and not left in the back yard. He
is currently at our dog sitter, who use to train dogs for Guide Dogs and they
said he is a great loving dog. That he should not stay at our house as he will
upset our two older dogs and they should not be put through this disruption. I
would love to find Honey Bear a loving home for the last few years of his life.
Please email or call me if you may be interested in adopting him. Email

DODGE 2-3
year old neutered choc male 85 pounds Dodge was rescued from the Modesto
Shelter where, due to lack of space, he was scheduled to be euthanized. We
can't believe what a wonderful boy he is. Dodge looks very serious in his
photo here, but typically has a huge smile on his face. He has the stocky
English lab body and the gorgeous blocky head. He loves people and is also
good with other dogs. We don't know about cats. He loves to be hugged and
petted and gives great kisses. He takes treats gently. Dodge rode from
Modesto to Monterey in the front seat of the car and was great, except for
trying to give the driver kisses periodically. He knows "Sit" but not much
else. He pulls very hard on the leash when he starts out, but eventually
settles down and walks quite well. This is just training. Dodge will
retrieve, but doesn't quite get the concept of returning the ball or toy
that's been thrown. He's a gentle dog even though he's large and he doesn't
jump on you. He also isn't a barker. We think he will be fine with kids,
but he is strong, so shouldn't be with small children who might be knocked
over unintentionally. There is not an aggressive bone in his body and he
allows you to put your fingers in his mouth and handle his feet without
protest. Dodge is very unhappy to be boarded in a kennel however. He
desperately wants a home of his own. He is an incredibly handsome boy (the
photo just doesn't do him justice) and rescue really likes him a lot!! You
will too!! For more information on this great dog, please call Judy @ (831)

Louie Neutered black Lab Mix 3 - 4 years old 50 pounds (he needs to gain about 10 pounds)
Rescue saved Louie from being euthanized at the local shelter after he was
dumped in a rescue volunteer’s neighborhood. He’s a mellow, somewhat shy
boy with a sweet, playful personality. He seems to like everyone, especially the ladies! That’s not to say that he doesn’t like men. He also
seems to like other dogs and has been friendly to all those he has met. He
is very easy going on a walk. And, we haven’t heard him bark. He will bond
quickly to whomever adopts him. He is housebroken and current on his
vaccinations. If you are interested in meeting this sweet boy, please call
Holly at (650) 322-9888. Louie is located in Menlo Park.Update: Louie is doing very well and gaining weight. He is coming out of his shell and really showing his cute personality. He is the favorite at the vet clinic – everyone raves about how sweet he is. He is enjoying daily walks and appreciates all the attention he is receiving. Rescue would love to adopt him to a new home soon, so he can experience what it’s like to be well loved and appreciated. |

Red yellow female; approx. 8yrs
old; 55lbs. She has an appointment to be spayed in 4 weeks.
Red is from the Peninsula Humane
Society. They took her in as a stray from the Woodside area. During her
stay at the shelter she was not doing well. Red was frightened and did
not feel well. Because of this we took her and she is now at the kennels
in Pacifica until we can find her a permanent home or a foster home
temporarily. Before bringing her to Pacifica she stayed at our Vet
Hospital for a complete exam. A mammary tumor was found and surgery was
done to have it removed. The bad news is the tumor did prove to be
cancer. The good news is that there is no other sign of cancer. All
other tests came back fine and no other treatment at this time is
required. The vet feels that there is a good chance that the cancer
could come back somewhere else in her body in the future so we will
recheck her every 4 months or so just to keep an eye on her. Also, a
fund has been set up for any additional care she may need in the
future. Red is a really nice dog. She loves people, is very smart,
well trained, walks perfectly on leash, loves to retrieve, and can hold
3 balls in her mouth at one time. She is also fine with other dogs. She
will need a new owner that understands that she is a older dog that
perhaps has only 2 yrs left. After meeting her you will know why she
deserves that second chance in a loving home. For more information
call Don at 650 359-0981

SIERRA
(right) SPAYED CHOCOLATE FEMALE LABRADOR RETRIEVER MIX 7 YEARS OLD 75 LBS.
SARA (left) SPAYED CHOCOLATE FEMALE LABRADOR RETRIEVER 11 YEARS OLD
85 LBS. Sara and Sierra (two delightful and very sweet Labs) were
left at a home (Reno, NV) when their owners were served with an eviction notice.
They did leave the residence, furniture and all, except they left these very
sweet girls behind. Sadly, both girls ended up at the Washoe County Shelter and
were listed as possibly "special needs" due to the fact that Sierra (the younger
girl) appeared to be blind. We suspect that the girls have been together for a
long time as Sierra definitely takes cues for directions from her older buddy.
There is a possibility that the girls might even be related, maybe mother and
daughter. Sierra is a Lab mix, a shorter version of Sara but with a very Labby
head and body. They both are very friendly and sweet, and other than Sierra's
vision issues, seem to be doing very well in foster care. Their foster even
suspects that Sierra might actually have partial vision as she has noticed that
Sierra does seem to navigate around kitchen cabinets and furniture reasonably
well; there is just that occasional... OOPS! when she
bumps into something!! Sierra's mix
might
be part basset hound, which would explain her front legs and shorter stature,
but despite her conformation, she surely seems
to get around very well. Her vision
issues may relate to congenital cataracts, but she has not been evaluated by an
ophthalmologist. There is a possibility that her vision could be improved if
one or both of the cataracts could surgically be dealt with but for now she
seems to do very well with her current state. It is for this reason the Lab
Rescue feels that both girls should be adopted together. Sara (the older girl)
appears to be very bright and healthy with no evidence of any lameness issues,
but we did note that she has a mammary mass that was evaluated by the shelter
veterinarian and determined to not be a malignancy. There was no evidence that
there was any issue with peripheral lymph nodes and therefore probably not a
life limiting problem. Both girls would have very low exercise needs and would
love to be family companions for the remainder of their lives. They have been
spayed in the past, are current on their vaccines, dewormed, micro-chipped and
heartworm testing is pending. They will be in foster care in the Reno, NV area
through the weekend but will be moved to another foster in Martinez, CA early
next week. For any families wishing to help these really sweet girls and
wanting dogs that will be very low maintenance but great companions, Sara and
Sierra are the girls for you!! For more information on these two great doggies,
please call Robin at (530) 448-4811. |

LUKE 3
year old neutered black male 85 pounds Luke is an extremely handsome boy
who was yet another stray in Bakersfield. He is very friendly and has
obviously had some training. He knows sit and down and walks well on a
leash (unless he sees another dog, and then he pulls to go visit)! He
loves other dogs and plays well with them. He even played nicely with
Penny, the little black puppy that's also listed. He has no aggression
of any kind and will back down if a dominant dog wants his or her way.
He just wants to play and have fun. His foster family has a 9 month old
black female lab and they are best of friends. Luke rides well in the
car (we crated him, though I don't think he requires a crate). He slept
through the night on a dog bed next to his foster's bed. He will bark
to get attention, but stops when told to stop. He definitely
understands "no." He is housebroken. Luke loves to play with toys and
especially loves to run around his foster sister with both of them
hanging on to one toy. He shares his water bowl without incident and
has no food aggression. Luke is a big boy and is very active and
playful. We're sure he'll be good with children, but might be too
enthusiastic for toddlers (might knock them over without intending to).
You won't find a better looking boy and he's got the personality to
match. For more information on Luke, please call Judy @ (831)
622-0577. Luke is located in Monterey.

| Jenny is a beautiful 4-year old pure-bred chocolate lab. She has the most precious face imaginable! Jenny came to us at about 2.5 years of age. Jenny lives with 2 other dogs, once of which is one of her puppies, and gets along well with them, though initially she needed some time to be truly comfortable and interactive with the other dog, a rottie mix. Jenny is mostly an outdoor dog and sleeps in the garage at night in an ungated crate. Jenny is a super sweet dog almost all the time, except when she is awakened out of sleep, or when she is eating food or playing with “her” toy. Because of this, and the new arrival of our baby, we think it’s best that she go to a home with older or no children, and with someone who will be able to train her out of this behavior. At all other times, Jenny has been the most friendly, fun-loving, cuddly dog that we could have hoped for. Jenny deserves a great home where she’ll receive lots of love and attention. Although she has been an outside dog (including garage) for the past year and a half, she did extremely well when she lived indoors while she was pregnant and nursing the puppies. In fact, she would probably do better in a home where she was allowed to go inside and outside at her own free will. She has not been exposed to children or little kids that we know of, so we aren’t sure exactly how she’ll do in that environment. In all honesty, the best situation for her would be living with a retiree in a house with a big backyard and no other dogs! We would like to place Jenny in the right home and as such, we would like her new family to be approved by FCRR. In the meantime, you may contact us via email for more information at: nafoss5@hotmail.com. Tell them Lab Rescue sent you. 5/10/08 |

Whenever possible, Lab Rescue (GGLRR) will list Labradors that are available through other San Francisco bay area animal shelters, other rescue organizations and individual rescuers. If you know of a Labrador that is need of a home that is available through an organization such as these, please email us at doghouse@labrescue.org and we will post the information. The organizations below are not part of Golden Gate Labrador Rescue, Inc. We provide this listing service as a courtesy only. If you are interested in any of the dogs listed below you should contact these agencies directly.
We have had tremendous success helping the local shelters and rescue groups place Labs and Lab mixes directly from the shelters. Because of this success, many of the shelters now keep dogs longer because they know they have an improved chance of placing these dogs. If you should adopt one of the dogs listed through one of the organizations below, please email doghouse@labrescue.org so we can keep our site as up to date as possible. It is updated daily and some times updated several times during the day as we receive updates from our volunteers and the general public. Thanks, Lab Rescue.

Hello
I am Lilly. I am a year old spay female Black Lab mix. For many many
month I lived in the Ukiah Shelter. I nearly went crazy, then a kind rescue
group took me under their wing and brought me to a foster home. Where I got to
run, play with other canines and be a dog! I have a personal trainer now who
says, "Lilly loves people and other dogs, she lives to sniff things. Lilly is
very, very loving. With her high energy she needs and active, active family." To

Hello I am Kino.
I am 7 year old Chocolate Lab with maybe a touch of Chesapeake Bay
Retriever. I was found as a stray by a family many months ago. They tried
to find my people, but there were no where to be found. I wanted to stay
with the family who found me but their dog was not nice to me, so they
brought me to the shelter. At their house I lived outside day and night, so
in some ways maybe it is best that I am now in the Ukiah Shelter looking for
a new family. I am mellow and very people oriented. If you would like to
know more about adopting me and get more photos of me please email Sage at

Angie is a 10-year-old female Labrador Retriever mix who
weighs approximately 60 lbs. This
older girl's energy-level and spirit belie her age, for Angie can
regularly be seen walking at a nice pace around the entire loop of
Aquatic Park with a devoted volunteer. Along the way, white coat
glistening in the sun, Angie stops to graze in the high grass of the
park's various meadows, to watch the various goings-on in the park
environs, and to toss back over her shoulder, connecting glances with
her walker. Indeed, Angie seems to savor every moment outside, leading
us to surmise that she may not have been given ample opportunity to
enjoy the great outdoors in her life before arriving at the shelter.

Sphere is a 7-year-old neutered male Labrador
Retriever/Chow Chow mix who weighs approximately 65 lbs. He
came in with his much older lap-dog sized companion, Pami, who
was adopted after only a few days. He has been a bit forlorn in
her absence, constantly looking for her when out on walks.
However, we are bound and determined to cheer up this sweet
pooch, whose rather mournful bark and somewhat sad-looking eyes
serve to further the impression that this pooch could use some
fun times and a warm forever-home to look forward to. We've
been giving him lots of love, which he responds to in kind, and
walks, which he appears to enjoy (and need, for Sphere is
overweight, but definitely on a downward trend). Sphere seems
eager for the company of other dogs, and will bark playfully,
tail wagging when he passes them on a walk. This boy would make
an excellent companion for someone who is looking for a
housebroken, good-natured dog who relishes the companionship of
humans and most female canines, alike.

Faye is
a 1 1/2-year-old spayed female Labrador Retriever/American Pit Bull Terrier
mix who weighs approximately 50 lbs. Faye is a subdued and beautiful deep
brown Labrador-pit bull mix who will make a wonderful companion to an
experienced (with dogs) individual or family where she is the only dog. Faye
forges very intense connections with her humans, and on walks always stays
loyally right by her companion's side. She is not distracted by passing
bicycles, baby carriages, and runners, and does not care to interact with
other dogs; her human is what seems to make Faye happiest. This sweet quiet
girl has an overall good nature with humans and would undoubtedly appreciate
the serenity that can be found in a loving forever-home.

Shadow
Case Number: 54496 Primary Breed: Labrador Retriever Secondary
Breed: Mixed Breed Gender: Female Age: 12 Years 0 Months
Color: Black Weight: Approximately 40-75 pounds Fee: $100
Description: Shadow is such a great dog. She is ever so lovable and gentle. She
always has a smile and wagging tail to greet you with. She is kennel trained and
walks excellently on a leash. And if that's not enough here are a few more
reasons to adopt a senior dog: They have a tremendous amount of love to give
you; they have learned many of life's lessons. They know for example that shoes
are for walking and bones are for chewing; they can learn new tricks and be a
valuable family and community member; senior dogs often fit into your household
with ease. So please come in and meet Shadow - - she would love to come home
with you. This dog has been rated "B" by our behavior evaluation system. This
means that the dog will most likely do best with older children. Your individual
household and pet experience may influence your decision to adopt a dog that
falls outside the recommended letter code as it relates to children who live in,
or frequently visit, your home. Read more about our evaluation codes.
