Astro: 8-month-old male black Lab 53 pounds neutered

Background: Another fabulous stray Lab looking for a forever home. Found on the streets of Antioch, hard to understand how someone can lose such a fabulous vibrant young dog. He was pretty stressed out at the shelter -- “Get me outta here!” – and we were happy to oblige.

What Astro’s foster says: A fabulous dog! Excitable, has a tendency to jump up to “greet” you - so we are working to eliminate that. Crates well, he will voluntarily go in for treats and will sleep/remain quiet till I make the morning coffee and let him out for his breakfast. Well behaved indoors, does not go where he is not allowed. Overall, he's getting into a routine. Not aggressive to other dogs, just curious. Astro loves his ear scratches and belly rubs. He has learned to “sit”, “stay”, "stop", "come", "down" in decreasing order. When indoor, he's good holding and let's us know when he has to go out for his #1 or 2. The holding part is true for backyard as well. We are giving Astro multiple 45-minute walks each day and he loves it.

What Astro’s Rescue Rep says: This guy was pretty darn scared of me (a guy) when I first met him at the shelter, but he warmed up after a while. I wonder if he was so accustomed to all the women at the shelter, and then I suddenly showed up. Or he may have been mistreated by a guy is his former home. He is doing so much better at his foster home – hanging out with his foster dad and foster mom. Obedience training will be a must for Astro. He will need lots of exercise and leadership, but should make a great family dog. No idea how he is with cats. We think he’d be a fine dog for a family with children. Will need ongoing rehabilitation to be less skittish around men.

Medical Information: This guy is in fine health. Astro is current on Rabies and distemper vax, heartworm negative, and microchipped.

Astro is located in: Danville.

Our volunteers donate their personal time & phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
