Ghost: 10-year-old male black Lab mix 65 lbs neutered

Background: Ghost has lived with one family his whole life (the family owned Ghost’s mother). The family’s housing situation recently changed and they can no longer keep Ghost with them. They sadly surrendered him to Marin Humane where he was a staff and volunteer favorite. GGLRR met this sweet older gentleman and thought he deserved a more comfortable life in a foster home while searching for his new forever family, so we brought him into our program.

What Ghost’s foster says: Ghost is super sweet. He minds well and knows the commands sit, lie down, and shake. He is fun to walk as he moves along at a brisk pace and doesn’t stop every three feet to sniff something. He walks well on the leash and is easy to correct if he starts to go somewhere he shouldn’t. He gets along well with other dogs but is a little timid around them. He likes cats, well he likes to chase cats but will stop if you tell him to do so. He will keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t sneak up behind him. Once they are out of sight he forgets about them. Ghost has some separation anxiety but can stay at the house by himself for short durations without incident so far. We have been gone for an hour and no issue. When you return get ready to see him turn himself inside out with happiness. His tail should fall off as fast as it is moving.

As he is a foster dog we don’t let him up on the couch or bed but I feel he would be a great lap dog, He will try to sneak up and when caught will begrudgingly slink back down, He will play fetch for a little while and likes to play with a rope toy by himself. Even though he is part Lab he isn’t a big fan of the water. He takes treats very gently all the time, He is ten years old but has spunk. He sleeps on a dog bed at night and will sleep in a crate during the day with the door open. He doesn’t like being locked in a crate too well.

What Ghost’s Rescue Rep says: Ghost would love to spend his golden years in a home where he can go on walks and hang with his people. He’s a great dog for someone looking for a mellow companion. He has a hard time being left alone for long periods so he would do best in a home where someone is around most of the time. With other dogs he enjoys companionship but doesn’t love to play. He has been to doggy daycare in the past and was appropriate with the dogs he met at Marin Humane and at the foster’s neighbors. Per his prior owner, he has lived in a home with other dogs and cats in the past. A secure home and yard are important as he has found ways to get out when left home alone for too long.

Medical Information: Neutered, microchipped, current on shots, and heartworm negative, with a recent normal senior blood panel. His teeth could use a cleaning sometime in the next year.

Ghost is located in: San Jose

Our volunteers donate their personal time & phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
