Behr 1 year-old male black lab mix, 50 pounds, neutered

Background: Behr's owner has made the difficult decision to rehome him given her current situation. He was kept in his crate for several hours a day and did not have access to a fenced yard. Although he had regular walks he was not able to socialize much with other dogs or people.

What Behr's foster says: Behr's name says it all! His heart and courage is as large and powerful as his name. Behr is easy to love and train with very little effort needed to get him on track. He has already learned the commands Sit, Load, Crate, and Go Play. Behr loves to play fetch, hike and snuggle on the couch. He will need time to settle in and it takes a bit for him to relax given his history. Behr will be a great companion for an active family or a family that likes to take it easy walking or fishing. It breaks my heart that I can't keep him but I know my current situation will not allow me to house 2 large dogs at this time.

What Rescue Rep Says Behr is a friendly, playful young pup who loves attention and playing with toys. He lived with another small, older dog (puggle) and now enjoys playing with his foster brother, another lab mix. Not sure about cats. He's about 50 lbs and within a few weeks he is already learning to walk nicely on a leash and knows several commands. He is food motivated but shows no signs of resource guarding of food or toys. He is crate trained and house trained. When meeting other dogs Behr gets very excited and pulls to get close, but has not shown any aggression and just wants to play.

A home with a yard where Behr could burn off some of his energy would be ideal. He will need regular exercise and some help with leash training. He does like to jump up when meeting people so not a good match for families with toddlers, but he has been around children over 6 with no issues. Another older dog might be good to show him the ropes, although he'd likely be fine alone.

Medical: Behr is in good health, is neutered, and is up to date on all his vaccines and preventatives.

Our volunteers donate their personal time and phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
