Buddy: 2 year-old neutered male chocolate Lab mix, 85 lbs
Background: Buddy’s human owners are dealing with some health issues of their own and are no longer able to give Buddy the activity level this young energetic Lab needs. They are sad to give him up but realize that it is best for Buddy. Buddy is currently available for adoption, though GGLRR is also looking for a foster home who can keep Buddy until he finds his forever home.
What Buddy’s owner says: Buddy is a 2-year old lab/pointer mix that we adopted from a rescue in Fresno over a year and a half ago. Buddy is a very sweet, affectionate boy that needs a lot of exercise which we will not be able to provide for him. He is great with kids, and may knock little ones over with his exuberance. Buddy gets along great with other dogs. He does pretty well on leash, but may pull at times. He knows - sit - stay - no - come- go retrieve. He sleeps in his crate at night - has access to the house and backyard during the day. Buddy shows no possessiveness over food or toys.
What Buddy’s evaluator says: WOW what a great dog! Buddy would make an amazing addition to an active family with older children who can help run off that big, young lab energy. Buddy was happy to meet me and came right with me on a walk around the park. He is a very big guy, but he walked well on leash. He did have a prong collar, but he didn’t pull me. Another dog walked by us and then some walkers. He was much more interested in the dog who walked by than the people, but he didn’t pull me or whine. He sat next to me with his ears up and his forehead wrinkled to see if he was going to be allowed to play. Buddy would do great with another dog in the home to play with.
He is a typical lab who would bond with his people and then be their best friend, maybe even trying to climb in a lap or couch. He has an extremely gentle mouth when I fed him treats and food. He wasn’t bothered when I stuck my hand in his food bowl. He let me touch him head to toe, paws and ears. By the end we were fast friends, and he liked me giving him all the pets he could get. He is great with other dogs and really is more interested in playing with other dogs than people. Though I think if kids were around, he would gladly play his favorite game of tag. He is young and still a puppy and may knock younger children or older adults over accidentally. He is a high energy lab and should not be mistaken for a lab with a mellow demeanor. He will require a home that is very active and has time to get him a lot of exercise at least 2-3 times per day. This dog needs to RUN so a large yard would be great. He met my 40 lb English Springer Spaniel with no problem and was very happy to meet her and immediately play chase. They even wrestled a little and he was great!
What Buddy's Rescue Rep Says: Buddy would do great in a home with an active family who have the time and energy to take him out for several walks a day and with a large yard for him to run and play in. He loves to play with other dogs at the dog park. He does not like cats.
Medical: Buddy is neutered and up to date on vaccinations, with a recent negative heartworm test.
