Cocoa: 4 year-old neutered male, purebred Chocolate Lab, 74 lbs
Background: Cocoa’s family got him at 8 weeks of age from a professional breeder who specializes in breeding Labs for hunting and as good family pets. Cocoa’s owner’s didn’t anticipate the energy level and exercise that a Lab from field lines would need. They love Cocoa dearly and have spent a lot of time working and training with him. It has been a difficult decision for them to consider rehoming Cocoa but they are sadly realizing that at their current stage of life, jobs and kids, they are not able to meet his needs. Cocoa is a dog that needs more than a once a day walk and some fetch in a small backyard. Cocoa is a loved and cared for dog who will thrive in an environment that can better provide the physical and mental stimulation that he needs.
What Cocoa's owner says: Cocoa is a well-socialized, highly trainable, food-motivated dog, who makes new friends everywhere he goes. It is very hard to give him up for adoption, but it is the right thing to do; his size, energy level, and athletic build require a more spacious environment with more jobs to do: more hunting, more fetching, more running, more sniffing. He needs to be in a home with active adults with enough capacity to give him the exercise he needs. Cocoa uses a side dog run for potty, sleeps and rests in his crate when not supervised, and loves exercise, attention, food, and playing. Cocoa has been through multiple training courses and knows many commands: sit, stay, down, come, wait, off, leave it, drop it, shake, and many others. Cocoa loves going for walks, but he does pull out of excitement. He loves other dogs and children but has not been around cats. His health is good, he is microchipped, and he is up-to-date on all shots. Because of his excitement and size, he should be around middle school-aged kids or older, rather than little ones or the elderly, because he does eagerly reach his body forward out of joy in meeting new people, which could be hazardous to certain family members. We crate Cocoa when not supervised, due to a love of chewing on non-dog items and counter surfing. Although he is 4, he still has a lot of puppy/adolescent dog behavior.
What Rescue Rep Says Cocoa is a purebred Lab who will make a wonderful companion for an owner with an active outdoor lifestyle who can provide the physical exercise and mental stimulation that Cocoa needs and who is comfortable with his athleticism and exuberance. Cocoa is a ball of energy and intense but also very friendly. Field labs can be a bit much for some people but an absolute joy for others who have the time, space, and energy to work and play with them. Cocoa needs a job and would love to be your loyal companion on many outdoor adventures. He is friendly with and enjoys the company of other dogs, though his intensity may be too much for some dogs. He has not been around cats, and my guess is that he would not be a good fit, many field labs have some prey drive. Although Cocoa is a high energy dog, he does know how to calm and settle, and will be an amazing dog in a home where his exercise and mental stimulation needs are being met. A tired dog is a happy dog!
Cocoa is from field lines but has not been around guns so we don’t know how he would do as a hunting dog. He has also not had any off leash training and would need some work to have a reliable off-leash recall.
Medical: Cocoa is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm negative and on preventatives.
