Jonah 1-year-old male black Lab 65-lbs Neutered

Background: Neighborhood chatter had it that Jonah's owners used to just let him out to go potty alone on the streets of SF, and one day they decided they didn't want him anymore and so they didn't let him back in. Jonah was then wandering the streets for over a week until a neighbor finally had enough and apprehended him. The neighbors had a resident dog that Jonah delighted in playing with and keeping company; it sounds like they kept Jonah for a few days before realizing that two dogs, two kids, and two cats was more than they could reasonably attend to in their little San Francisco apartment. So they brought Jonah to the SF shelter.

What The Shelter Staff Said About Jonah: While in the shelter, Jonah was very anxious, but an absolute sweetheart. He was so gentle and affectionate and cuddly! He is an aspiring lap dog (we don't have the heart to tell him he doesn't really fit) and delighted in playing fetch with volunteers - he's a good retriever boy! Jonah also appears to be housetrained. He's a tender guy and we can tell is desperate to bond with someone again. He seems like a ship without an anchor (or a harbor) right now and it's definitely left him feeling worried and scared. Despite all of the changes he's endured, Jonah is really trying to put his best paw forward. He is a good kid who's had a crappy summer!

What Jonah's Evaluator Says: Jonah is gentle, mellow and amazingly adorable!!! He is interested in people and his surroundings. Walks pretty nice on leash. Soft mouth. Allowed me to touch him all over and hug him. He was not particularly interested in toys. He ignored the tug-of-war rope and a couple of other toys. He sort of chased after a thrown ball, put it in his mouth, and then dropped it after a few seconds. Jonah is a total chill dog; seems to have an amazingly calm, and mellow personality for a 1-year-old dog.

What Jonah's Foster Says: Jonah is a gem of a dog. He is sweet and good-natured. He is very affectionate, cuddly, and friendly with all. Jonah is eager to please and wants to make his people happy. Surprisingly, he has a calm temperament for a young dog, but he can get excited when it comes to greeting other dogs while on a leash. He will whine and pull towards the dog(s). He wants to say "hello," but he can come across a bit strong as he is young and exuberant. Jonah would benefit from continued training in this area. He did have a few hiccups with housetraining during the first few days of fostering, but the hiccups no longer occur and he is now housetrained. We do not crate Jonah. We have left him alone for no more than a few hours at a time. If left alone, you want to ensure he is safely enclosed and cannot escape as he will look for his people. Although he was fine, he would benefit from a family that does not leave him alone for long periods of time. He is fine with other dogs. We have a small 14-year-old dog and Jonah gives her space and does not react when she tells him "no." He would love it if there was another playful dog in the household whom Jonah can play with. Not sure about cats. We have birds and while initially curious, he now leaves them alone when they're out of the cage. No kids in our household, but we feel confident he would be fine with children. He does not jump when greeting people.

What Jonah's Rescue Rep Says: Pretty darn awesome young dog. Perfect for an active family that will not leave him alone for extended periods of time. No idea how he is with cats. Presence of another dog would be fine. Best that kids be older due to his young age. Will need some basic training and leash walking skills.

Medical: In great health. Current on vaccinations, microchipped and neutered.

Located In: San Francisco.

Our volunteers donate their personal time phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
