Jones – Male chocolate Lab, 9 years old 70 lbs Neutered

Background: Originally bought as a puppy from a breeder specializing in hunting dogs, Jones has lived with his family for his entire life. Unfortunately, the five-year-old boy in the family is not respecting Jones’ boundaries and recently jumped on Jones while he was sleeping; Jones was startled, and he jumped up and nipped the young boy. The family is afraid their son will continue to pester Jones, resulting in another bite. Jones does great with the family’s older daughter who grew up with Jones. They have sadly decided to find Jones a new home where he won’t be annoyed by a young boy.

What Their Current Owner Says:Jones is a fabulous dog. He is quite an active guy. Loves to swim and fetch, and fetch and swim. He would fetch and swim all day long if allowed. Jones knows a few commands: sit, stay, come, fetch, and leave it. He sleeps in our laundry room. Jones is house-broken and crate-trained; but we rarely crate him. He will stay in a crate in the back of my truck when we are going hunting. Jones has demonstrated some food guarding as he does not like food taken away from him while he is eating. No idea how Jones would be with a cat -- he does love to chase squirrels and rats.

What Their Current Owner Says About Jones' Hunting:Seasoned water dog that loves his job. Will run through icy water no questions asked. Retrieves well within the check you’re working. Will chase birds into brush and bramble as well. Could also do well as a pheasant dog but won’t point. Has a soft carry so does not mail or damage birds during retrieval. Will play fetch for hours as well.

What Their Rescue Rep Says: Nothing about Jones reveals he is nine years old. Full of life and energy. He is very focused on his man owner. We’d love Jones to find another hunter guy or gal that is ready to make Jones their sidekick. Jones is currently living with a young French bulldog and they get along just fine; he‘d previously lived with a female pit mix. Jones would probably be fine in a home with another dog. No young kids that might annoy Jones.

Medical: Healthy, fully vaccinated, neutered, heartworm negative. Needs to be microchipped.

Located in: Sacramento.

Our volunteers donate their personal time phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
