Koda: 4.5 year-old black Labrador, 85 Pounds, Neutered

Background: Koda's mom has made a tough decision to rehome him because she will be moving and is unable to take Koda with her.

What Koda’s owner says: We found Koda by searching for lab breeder's on the AKC website and in June 2020 we found a breeder that we liked and picked up Koda. Koda has always been energetic, playful, and funny. Koda is an excellent companion and enjoys being close to those he loves and enjoys playing fetch.

The ideal home for Koda would be with a family that would have time to take Koda for walks and play fetch. He also loves to swim and has been a member of a dog swim gym and likes to swim in natural bodies of water. He can also be very calm and relaxed at home, he is fine by himself when we have to run errands or go somewhere for a few hours.

Koda does well with dogs that he is familiar with but can get nervous or uneasy at the initial meeting of a new dog. But, I believe it is nervous excitement because I do see a playful energy but there are times he can get fearful and react to dogs that are too close. For his comfort, I typically give lots of space when passing other dogs so he doesn't get nervous. He would be great with a family that has experience with dog walking or is familiar with dog behavior. He loves to be in nature and to go for walks and explore. He has gone through basic obedience training and understands basic commands such as sit, down, leave it, stay, and shake.

What Rescue Rep Says Upon meeting Koda in his home, he greeted my husband and me excitedly while we sat on the sofa. He welcomed pets and allowed all over handling. Koda's mom mentioned that he can be nervous and unsure around other dogs and has snapped when they were too close for his comfort.

We introduced him to one of our dogs, another male lab. Our dog was boisterous and barking for the treats that Koda's mom was carrying. Upon first seeing our dog, Koda's hackles were up but after some parallel walking then walking behind one another, they mey nose to nose and did fine. At one point, it did look like Koda wanted to mount our dog but we kept on moving.

We want Koda in a home where he is not left for long stretches of the day. A stay-at-home parent, families who work from home or families who can take him to work with them would be ideal. A family who wants a dog to accompany them on outdoor adventures and vacations would be wonderful!

We are looking for a home where Koda will receive daily exercise and activity. He is a nice dog that would thrive in a home with experienced owners who can provide him with attention, training and exercise. Training focused on proper dog introductions and socialization. We don't know how Koda is around cats; his mom said he looks at them curiously but has not had any direct interactions. He sees a lot of geese and squirrels on his walks but ignores them and doesn't seem to be interested. He would make an amazing addition to an active family who can help run off that big Lab energy. He is walked with a head collar (Halti) to keep him from pulling.

Koda has lived with children and teens ranging in age from 6-16 years. Koda sleeps on a dog cot/bed in the living room.

Medical: Koda is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. He will be heartworm tested.

Our volunteers donate their personal time and phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
