MOOSE (5 Year-old Neutered Male, 89 Pounds )

Background: Moose and Mia, formerly Zeus and Zia,  made their way to Lab Rescue via Susanville after a livestock rescue volunteer, located there, was alerted about two dogs left abandoned in a backyard. The volunteer was able to reach their owner who had relocated to another country and told her to "just shoot them." She made a 45 minute daily trip to feed/water these two for weeks while she searched for rescue and was connected to one of GGLRR's fosters. Long story short, a village banded together to rescue them (livestock rescue volunteer, vet, and boarding facility in Susanville, volunteer pilot, and GGLRR). Sadly, we had to euthanize Mia at the end of October as she stopped eating and wouldn't come inside the house. An emergency trip to the vet revealed she had a mass, likely cancerous, and inoperable.

What Moose's Foster Says: Moose is a sweet, smart goofy guy, about 80 pounds of furry Labrador love. He has great house manners, walks nicely on leash, sleeps well through the night, loves to meet and hang out with people, and of course, he treasures a nice belly rub. He loves to chase 2 tennis balls at the same time so he can bring them both back in the same mouthful. Moose is able to do all of these things in spite of being deaf. I’ve been teaching him simple hand signals for “come, sit, down, stay, drop the tennis ball, and good boy!!”; he’s a quick learner.

Moose is an all-around wonderful fella who is easy and fun to live with. His ideal situation would be an active home with another dog so he can have a buddy from whom to pick up cues. For anyone who wants to do a deep dive about deaf dogs, I can highly recommend “”The Complete Guide to Owning a Deaf Dog” by Amanda Bradley. Moose also comes complete with an in-person training session with me.

What Moose's Rescue Rep Says: Moose is an incredibly loving, forgiving, and resilient dog. Having been abandoned and left to navigate life with Mia, he  needs a home where he will be embraced and a cherished member of the family, showered with affection, and given the pampering he deserves. Moose exhibits the lovable Labrador qualities of sweetness, friendliness, and a laid-back nature. He  always rolls onto his back, awaiting belly rubs!  We think Moose would do best in a home with another nice canine sibling, of equal temperament. Mia was considerably older than Moose, but provided calm guidance for Moose. Moose looked out for her while following her positive influence. He would be a wonderful family pet! We are seeking a family who will respect Moose and ensure that toddlers and young children do not crawl over or pull on him, even though he would likely tolerate it.  Cats are unknown.

Medical: Moose is neutered, microchipped, updated on vaccines and has been heartworm and fecal tested (negative). He is on a monthly flea/tick/heartworm preventative. Moose does appear to have hearing loss, and his foster has been teaching him hand signals. So far, sit and down.  .

Our volunteers donate their personal time phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
