Nala, 1 Year Old Female Black Lab, 65 lbs, Not yet Spayed

Background: Nala's owner has had her since she was a puppy but now needs to rehome her as she is unable to properly care for Nala given her busy work and school schedule. A recent move and limited time has not allowed her to give Nala the exercise she needs and she has to leave her in a crate for many hours during the day; 4 days a week. Nala has recently broken out of her crate a few times and chewed up items throughout the house. She does not display this behavior when her owner is home. Her owner is heartbroken that she can't keep her but feels she deserves a better life and made the difficult decision to rehome her.

What Nala' Family Says: Nala is playful, sweet and curious but with a lot of puppy energy. She knows a few commands like sit, down, come, and stay. She’s especially fond of running around with her dog sister, playing fetch, and swimming. Nala is crate trained and house trained.

What Rescue Rep Says: Nala is a young, high-energy pup who’s always ready for action. She greeted me with enthusiastic tail wags and a strong pull on the leash—clearly excited to make a new friend. While she did try to jump up in her excitement, she settled down and was happy to be petted all over. Nala currently lives with another young Pit Bull mix and they get along well. There’s also a cat in the home, and while Nala’s curious and wants to play, she tends to chase—so a cat-free home is best. When introduced to my female Lab, Nala was polite and showed interest in playing.

She’ll need some work on leash manners, as she pulls with a lot of strength and enthusiasm. Because she hasn’t had much formal training or structured socialization, Nala will do best with an experienced dog owner who can provide the guidance and consistency she needs.

Nala would be best in an active home where she won’t be left alone for long hours which has resulted in her recent destructive behavior. Before the move she was able to run around a large property and did not try to get out of her crate or chew on items in the house. She’d love a securely fenced yard to run and play in, and a family committed to helping her learn through basic obedience training. She may benefit from a calm, confident dog companion who can model good behavior. Older kids (12+) are a good match for her energy level, but she’s not the best fit for homes with toddlers or anyone unsteady on their feet, as she can still be a bit jumpy when excited.

With the right support and structure, Nala has all the potential to become a fun, loyal, and loving companion.

Medical: Nala appears to be in good health and will be brought up to date on her vaccines and preventatives in the next few weeks. She needs to be spayed which we will schedule as soon as she has a foster or adopter in place.

Our volunteers donate their personal time phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
