Riley: 3.5 Year-Old Female Black Lab, ~75 lbs, Spayed

Background: The owner has rehomed Riley due to a move for a new job, and the time commitments of the position have her out of the home for several  hours. She feels Riley deserves more than she can currently provide. Riley has been well taken care of, given toppers with her meals (sardines in water) and a frozen carrot for a treat to help keep her teeth clean.  The decision to rehome her wasn't an easy one but she knew it was for the best.

What Riley's Foster Says: Upon meeting Riley,I found a loveable large black lab. She did jump up to lick our faces. Riley is a strong 75 pound dog and a pretty intense puller on the leash. We took her to Lincoln with us to meet our 3 grandchildren (ages 2, 4 & 7). She loved them but the two younger boys were a bit intimidated. She is crate trained but prefers to sleep on a couch close to a human. She loves car rides, tug of war and meeting new people and dogs. She is reported to be a counter surfer though we did not experience that behavior. There are a few small holes in our backyard which we suspect were the work of Riley. She had no interest in playing with a tennis ball. Riley likes to be chased and will test us to see how far she can get away with things. We were told she needed Trazodone to relax before going to the vet. She was fine with the vet and other people and dogs at the vets’ office, when we took her for a checkup and heartworm testing. Riley will need an experienced owner who will keep her close by until her recall is solid and work with her to respond to requests. She is very loving and will make a great companion and friend for her new family.

What Riley's Rescue Rep Says: Upon meeting Riley, I found a friendly, energetic dog. She was with her brother (Whiskey) who is also in our program with a different foster. She allowed all over handling and does jump on you. She is a strong dog and a pretty intense puller on the leash; she will require leash training and a person steady on their feet. She grew up around older children and teens 12-17, and I suspect she'd be good with younger children as well. She is crate trained, likes to swim, enjoys car rides, and playing fetch. She is reported to be a counter surfer and has dug in the backyard. She does not like fireworks. She likes to be chased and will test you to see how far she can get away with things so she will need an experienced owner that will keep her closeby until her recall is solid.

We'd like to see Riley with a family where she won't be left alone for long stretches of the day and one where she can be out and about on family walks and adventures. No cats please. Riley previously lived next door to cats and would chase them. She's young and requires attention and exercise!

Medical: Riley is up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, spayed,  and heartworm negative.

Our volunteers donate their personal time phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
