Wilson: 4 years old, neutered male black Lab mix, 57 lbs
Background: Wilson has had quite the journey in his young life. A San Diego rescue took in his stray pregnant mom and fostered her and her puppies. A happy social puppy, Wilson enjoyed early life with his siblings, and was eventually adopted to a Bay Area person at nine months old. Fast forward three years, Wilson’s adopter has died and his roommate is seriously ill. A good Samaritan who came to help the roommate discovered Wilson living in the backyard, severely neglected, terrified of everything, with raging skin and ear infections, and nails that were several inches long. The roommate agreed to give Wilson to the good Sam and with the help of a team of local rescue angels, the good Sam brought Wilson home and he got some desperately needed medical care.
Amazing the healing that time and love and patience can bring. Wilson slowly learned to trust people again, one at a time. Initially he was too scared to let anyone touch him. He first became comfortable with the initial rescuer, then her daughter, and is steadily expanding his circle of trust. Wilson progressed in leaps and bounds after we moved him to a foster with a resident Lab. Wilson is taking cues from his canine big brother Tucker who is teaching Wilson how to be a family dog again. After hanging out with Tucker, Wilson has discovered the joys of leash walks and car rides and that these are no longer things to be afraid of. Wilson’s world is continuing to expand, though we are careful to introduce him to new people and situations slowly to not overwhelm him.
What Wilson's foster says: Wilson is very eager to learn new things. He is food motivated so it makes things easy. He really is a sweet dog and would be a great cuddle bug. He has a very gentle mouth when taking treats, loves to be petted and brushed. He would be really good as a solo dog for someone who likes an easy going dog, and he would enjoy having an active dog friend. Wilson gets the zoomies a couple times a day now. He loves car rides with his head in the wind, and when you leave him in the car to run errands he patiently waits without barking.
Wilson is always ready to meet new dogs eagerly. He is a little more comfortable with women. No young kids, as sudden hand and body movements still concern him. His personality is really fun, he loves to play bow and come and chase me, seriously a fun guy. Some super lucky family is going to LOOOOVE him.
What Rescue Rep Says Wilson has made incredible progress and is well on his way to becoming the happy joyful dog he once was, though he’s still going to be a bit of a project dog for a little while. We are looking to adopt him to a quieter home with someone who has the time and patience to take things slowly with him. Trust takes time. Wilson enjoys seeing other dogs and could benefit from the guidance of a calm and centered canine sibling or regular opportunities to hang out with a canine friend. A dog experienced person would be best and it would be helpful to have had experience with multi-dog households if he has a canine sibling. Wilson is housetrained. He's a sweet dog who wants to please and who will make an amazing companion in the right home.
Medical: Wilson is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. He is heartworm negative and on preventative. His skin, ears, and eyes have significantly improved. We are continuing treatment for some lingering conditions including what may be some seasonal allergies.
