Video: Clyde loves that ball

Clyde 7 year old male black lab, neutered

Background: Clyde's owner passed away unexpectedly and this wonderful dog needs to find a new forever home. He currently sleeps at night in a crate in the garage. Clyde spends the day in a dog run on the side of the house.

What The Family of Clyde's Former Owner Says: Clyde is house-trained, crate-trained, and knows lots of commands. Clyde like to ride in the car and loves to fetch and swim. He does countersurf. We play with him in the backyard a few times each week. He is very socialized with other dogs; friendly, playful, gentle. Clyde has too much energy for us to keep him. When he sees a cat or squirrel, he barks a bit and then stops.

What Our Evaluator Says: I met Clyde with his tail a-waggin'.  He was very engaging.  Wiggly body.  Wonderful eye contact.  Pulls a little on leash, especially when I changed direction -- clearly out of practice walking on a leash.  Readily sat for a treat; nice soft mouth when taking a treat from me.  Let me poke and prod him all over and hug him; loved the attention.  High energy, but calmed down easily.  No food guarding.  Appears to love chew toys; took the toy from me and walked around with it, brought it back to me sometimes, allowed me to take it.  Clyde met my own dog just fine; he wanted to play.  Clyde is a healthy 7-year-old dog.  The parents of his deceased owner took him in when his owner died, but they aren't able to exercise or walk him.  A very good-natured dog.  He apparently does real well with the small children in the family.  An active family would be a great fit for him.

What Clyde's Foster Says: We’ve been fostering Clyde for about 10 days as of New Year's Eve. He has really done well since we picked him up. He is super sweet, asking for pets and hugs all the time. But he also listens when it’s not the time for that. He has almost mastered walking calmly on his leash with harness. Clyde likes to go to his crate on his own and he knows “spot” to go sit on his other bed when we need him to. He loves to go in the car to the dog park. He will chase a ball for as long as you'll throw it. He isn’t too interested in other dogs, but is mellow when they come to him. Clyde is athletic – he’ll leap off our four-step porch and leap right back up. But he will calm right down when playtime is over. He loves his puzzle dish and knows how to slide the doors to get to his treats. It’s fun to watch him nose or paw the doors and his joy when he gets to the treat. He doesn’t mind you playing with his feet and toes, so we think he is comfortable getting his nails cut. We are experienced Lab owners and think Clyde will be an awesome dog – friendly, listens, wants to please, loves his scratches and getting brushed.

What Clyde's Rescue Rep Says: Clyde's former owner had him since Clyde was a puppy.  He has been around adults and young children.   Clyde needs an active life with lots of walks and hiking.  Currently spends all of his time outside or in the garage, so we need to get him to an adopter that will grant him frequent and permanent house privileges... and will make him part of the family.  Would be wonderful dog for a family with children.

Medical: Appears to be in good health.  Weighs around 65 pounds.  Neutered.  He is overdue on vaccinations.  We will get Clyde to our vet soonest for a full check-up.

Our volunteers donate their personal time phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
