Duke 3-month-old male black Lab mix 20 lbs Not yet neutered

Background: Young Duke was among ten puppies surrendered by their owner in Linden (east of Stockton). The puppies were from accidental litters between their female chocolate Lab and their female yellow Lab... and their neighbor's male Belgian Shepherd (the long-haired black Groenendael variety) who jumped the fence. Duke was born on 10 Jul (to the older female chocolate Lab).

What Duke's Foster Says: What an amazing, sweet, smart, and cuddly puppy! Duke came to us a week ago and he’s already learning basic commands, sit, come and find it! He’s almost completely house trained and is close to sleeping through the night (11 pm-6 am) with only a couple of wake ups to potty at night. He’s getting used to sleeping in his crate, but would much rather nap and cuddle either next to you or at your feet and in his bed. He loves to be with his people. He’s the perfect blend of playful and calm. He understands his place in the family and takes his lead from our 4-year-old lab who has quickly taken on the role of teacher and big brother. If you have an older pup, Duke will benefit from having another role model, he loves other dogs. We don’t have a cat so I can’t speak to that. He’s so mellow and sweet – I’ve cleaned his ears and given him baths – no wiggling or trying to get away – he just sat patiently. He’s already demonstrated an interest in water so if you’re a family with access to water he will likely love to join you. Duke is curious and figures out everything very quickly. He will need a family who provides clear guidelines because he’s clever and remembers everything and is at a perfect place in his growth and learning to be a great companion. Duke is a gem with all the best attributes you love about labs, loyal, loving and smart. He's incredibly smart and would benefit from an engaged active family who loves to hike and explore and keep up his training. An amazing family dog in the making!

What Duke's Rescue Rep Says: One terrific pup. Adopting a young puppy is much like having a newborn baby in the home: very demanding for care and attention, can't be left alone much, sometimes cries a lot -- especially at night when you want to sleep. Eat, poop/pee, play, sleep... repeat, repeat, repeat. Puppy-raising is also filled with joy and fun. Young puppies have sharp teeth and tend to go for human toes when available. We envision the adopter will need to be home most (if not all the time), have a home with a backyard, and be fully aware of what puppy care is all about. Not for those who are not ready to full commit to puppy care. Need to have a plan for puppy training and socialization with other puppies. Prior young dog experience is not required but highly preferable. Duke would thrive with an older dog in the home to show him the ropes. Cats okay.

Medical: In fine health. Just received his second of three distemper vaccinations. We will work with the adopter to get him neutered down the road. Duke will be restricted to his home and backyard until he has had his third distemper vaccination and is cleared by the vet to go out in public.

Our volunteers donate their personal time phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
