TOBBY: 8-Year-Old Black Lab Mix, Neutered, ~100 lbs
Background: Tobby was adopted by his foster family back in January and recently, has shown signs of discomfort around unfamiliar children, including two separate incidents where he attempted to bite them. In addition, where he was good around other dogs before, he has shown aggression towards them now. Because of this behavior, Tobby was evaluated by both a professional trainer and a veterinarian. Both experts agree that Tobby should not be placed in a home where there are—or will be—young children. Tobby currently lives peacefully with his family's own children (5 and 9 years), so his behavior appears to be limited to unfamiliar children.
Tobby came to GGLRR through a shelter in San Jose after being surrendered along with another dog for reasons that are unclear. One shelter staff said he thought the owners were older and unable to take care of their dogs any longer. What the shelter wrote about him: Meet adorable Tobby! He is 8 years young and such a sweetheart! Staff love him. He is very easy going.
What Tobby's Foster Says: Meet the incredibly handsome Tobby Bear! This distinguished and so handsome 8-year-old Black Lab mix is a gentle giant with a wonderfully chill and affectionate nature and overall quiet demeanor. Tobby is a seasoned gentleman who enjoys leisurely strolls, cozy naps, and the simple pleasure of being near his favorite people. He is a sweetheart who rarely barks and has never been destructive or had an accident in the house.
Tobby currently lives peacefully with our children (ages 5 and 9), suggesting his sensitivity is specifically towards unfamiliar children.
Tobby is incredibly loyal and has shown himself to be affectionately to us. He loves to be the center of attention, lounging on the deck in the sun, and scrounging for a treat. He enjoys his short daily walks, which have helped improve his endurance and mobility, especially as he has some arthritis. He is currently on an anti-inflammatory to ease his discomfort.
What Tobby's Rescue Rep Says: Meeting Tobby at the shelter, I found a calm, easygoing very big dog. He allowed all over handling and did fine meeting other dogs then but as aforementioned, he currently seems to not like other dogs. While at the shelter, both times, staff approached and commented on how great Tobby is! He has shown himself to be affectionately bonded with his people. However, Tobby needs a very specific type of home to thrive. We'd love to see Tobby in a home where he can be part of the family with a nice bed to sleep on, plenty of love, and regular exercise to keep him happy and healthy. He’s a great companion in a calm, quiet, and structured environment without children, other dogs, or cats.
Medical: Tobby is neutered and up to date on vaccinations. He does have some arthritis which was more noticeable when he first arrived into our program. However, his family has been taking him on short walks and has him on an anti-inflammatory to help ease the discomfort.
