Ansel 5-Year-Old Yellow Male Labrador Retriever 78 Pounds • Neutered

Background: Ansel has been with his current family for the past four years. He originally came from a breeder in the Sacramento area and was first placed with another family along with his brother. The family hoped to train both dogs for hunting but quickly realized it was difficult to train two young Labradors at the same time. They made the difficult decision to rehome Ansel, and his current family welcomed him into their home.

Due to a recent divorce, his family must now make the heartbreaking decision to find him a new home. They love Ansel dearly and want to ensure he finds the perfect forever family, which is why they reached out to Golden Gate Labrador Retriever Rescue.

What Ansel's Family Says: Ansel is an affectionate, loyal Labrador who absolutely loves being with his people. If he has the chance, he'll happily lean against you or cuddle up so he's touching someone he loves.

He is crate trained and actually enjoys spending time in his crate. He is fully house trained and knows several commands, including sit, stay, touch, come, down, and wait. One of his favorite games is waiting patiently to be released before chasing his beloved tennis ball or receiving a treat. Ansel is well-mannered around doors and is not a bolter. He patiently waits until he's invited outside.

His absolute favorite activity is playing fetch, and he could happily chase a ball for hours. He also enjoys car rides, adventures, trips to the beach, and spending time with his family.

Ansel has no separation anxiety and relaxes comfortably while his family is away. He has no food or resource guarding and has done well attending doggie daycare, where he enjoys playing off-leash with other dogs. Like many Labs, Ansel can be tempted by food left on the counter, so keeping snacks out of reach is recommended.

Because of his size and strength, Ansel would do best with older children rather than very young kids or frail adults. He also should not live with cats or other small animals, as he has a strong instinct to chase them.

Ansel receives plenty of exercise, currently enjoying two walks each day totaling approximately 2 to 5 miles. While he occasionally shows leash reactivity toward certain dogs, his family has had great success redirecting his attention with his favorite ball while walking him in a harness. He can also be tempted to eat animal droppings during walks, so he is typically kept on leash except in safe areas like the beach where he's focused on playing fetch.

What Lab Rescue Says: Ansel is a wonderful Labrador who will thrive with an active family that understands the Labrador breed and enjoys including their dog in everyday life.

He is incredibly smart, eager to please, and enjoys learning. Continued positive training—especially with leash manners—will help him continue to succeed. His tennis ball is an excellent training tool and can easily redirect his attention when he becomes excited. Ansel would do best in a home with:

If you're looking for a loyal companion who loves adventures, playing fetch, and spending time with his family, Ansel may be the perfect match.

Medical: Ansel is a healthy, well-cared-for Labrador with no known medical issues. He is: neutered, current on all vaccinations, on regular flea and tick prevention, and in excellent physical condition.

Our volunteers donate their personal time phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
