BLUE

Blue: 7 year-old black Labrador, 65 Pounds, Spay is scheduled in late August

Background: Blue's family made a decision to rehome her as they didn’t have time for her. The adult daughter, who was Blue's main caretaker, moved out of the home this last year. Blue was primarily an outside dog and was not getting the attention she deserved.

In her first foster home, Blue showed some possessiveness over toys when other dogs were nearby. With her current foster family, toys are kept out of the environment. For this reason, we recommend a toy-free shared space if there are other dogs in the home.

What Blue's Foster Says: Blue knew one family, where she was primarily kept in the backyard, but despite that, she’s affectionate, eager to connect and adapting well to the comforts of indoor living.

Blue is housetrained and will let you know when she needs to go out by standing at the door quietly, or barking when someone isn't there to let her out.

She walks well on a harness, pulls some, and will bark at other unfamiliar dogs. She walks fine among her canine foster siblings. We have three other Labs: a 10 year-old female, 8 and 7 year-old males. They all get along and aren't interested in playing with each other. The male initially tried to hump Blue, but after a growl, he stopped. She does show occasional interest in playing with the 7 year-old that doesn't reciprocate the same interest. He's given a low growl which seems to excite Blue to where she'll start barking; at that point, we separate them. I've played with her in the yard and she gets excited when a toy comes out, will play a little fetch, then do a few zoomies. She needs to be taught not to jump up and grab the toy/ball from you.

We can distribute treats to all the dogs in the same space without issue. Each awaits their turn. Blue has a very gentle mouth which none of ours do. Blue is fed in her crate. She is crate trained and sleeps quietly through the night, although she would love to be in bed with you if she were allowed. When we're home, we have crated her for short periods to keep her from following us everywhere. She will settle and lay down in the office when I'm working, but as soon as I get up, she follows. We've crated her when we're not home for a few hours, and that was after she'd been with us for a few days.

Some things to work on with Blue: she will attempt to take food from your hand, she will occasionally jump on you for attention and pets, she will sometimes bark for attention and if we have to work, or are on a call, we will crate her where she settles pretty quickly. She counter surfed pretty extremely the first couple of days she was with us, but that subsided.

What Rescue Rep Says: We want Blue in a home where she won't be left for long stretches of the day. A stay-at-home parent, families who work from home or families who can take her to work with them would be ideal. A family who wants a dog to accompany them on outdoor adventures and vacations would be wonderful! We are looking for a home where Blue will receive daily exercise and activity.

Her previous owner emphasized that Blue DOES NOT LIKE CATS! If you have gophers or any other critters that hide in your yard, she will dig until she finds them and their demise will follow.

Blue loves to swim. It would be ideal if her next home had a pool. Blue was raised around children ages 8–14 and spent time with a toddler over the past year but with her being an outside dog, we don't know how much time she actually spent with them.

She gets along well with other dogs and has lived peacefully with three canine foster siblings. She enjoys their company and does best in toy-free shared environments or with supervised one-on-one play, as she was reported to have some toy possessiveness (around other dogs) in her first foster home. If you’d prefer a one-dog household, she’d be perfectly content as your only pet—more attention for her!

We also discovered that Blue is not a fan of the vet. Prior to making her way to us, we sent her to the vet to get vaccines updated. Blue did fine up until the vet went to examine her ears; Blue got snappy so the visit was cut short. The owners report Blue was never like that before but Blue's last visit prior to this was over three years ago. We have taken Blue to the vet since and while she is happy to be there and likes the vet, she reacted when she had a painful abscess examined on her bottom. A few quirks to note:

• She’s not a fan of the vet, so visits may require a little extra patience and planning.

• On walks, she barks at other dogs, but with guidance and consistency, this can be managed. She also barks at the gardener.

If you’re looking for a loving, people-focused pup who will happily follow you from room to room and curl up next to you whenever she gets the chance, look no further. She craves human attention and will thrive in a home where she can be part of the family’s daily life. Her ideal day includes daily walks, running around the backyard, being by your side, and maybe a cozy nap on a soft bed nearby. She will also join you on the sofa if you let her.

Seeking experienced dog owners or individuals who have previously worked with dogs that need some behavior management, adults or older teens who can understand and consistently implement boundaries; not ideal for families with very young children due to the jumpy behavior. A stable household with a predictable routine, which can help Blue feel secure and reduce any anxiety-driven behaviors.

Medical: Blue will be getting spayed.  She is up to date with Rabies, Distemper/Parvo, heartworm tested (negative) and is microchipped.

Our volunteers donate their personal time and phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
