Bruno    6-year-old male yellow Lab       80 pounds     Neutered

Background: Bruno was surrendered by his family to the Oakland shelter in mid-March.  Allegedly, the family was moving and could not, would not take Bruno with them.  Based on his condition, we believe Bruno was kept in the back yard and likely lived a life on concrete.

What Bruno's Foster Says: From the moment I met Bruno, I could tell that he is the quintessential loyal Labrador! With a smile on his big noggin, this butterscotch boy will choose your affection over food. It’s clear that Bruno‘s primary desire is to be part of a loving pack; that special kind of good boy who wants to sit at your feet by the fire while you sip your favorite beverage. He has a very quiet, amenable nature and when on walks, whether it be a busy street or a park full of children and other adults, he pleasantly rolls with it as if he’s seen it all before. Very content to be with his human and see the world! Bruno has outstanding recall -- He will stick by your side, and with a short simple queue or calling of his name, he will immediately turn his attention back to you. I think he will make an ideal hiking partner. Bruno‘s transition has not been the easiest for him to understand. He will pace and look to you for guidance and calm leadership. That said, he is adapting very well to his chapter change. He (understandably) sticks to me like Velcro! He gets along fairly well with my 7-year-old female lab and did not show interest in my neighbor’s cat. His primary focus is movement with the pack. In fact, I have not seen him act adversely toward any person, animal or noise -- with the exception of trying to mount my own female Lab (we arrested that behavior immediately) and some pretty intense resource guarding when my own dog approached a toy that Bruno was enjoying. He’s a pretty chill, affectionate lab with blossoming potential that I would describe as “noble”, yet he carries a toy around in his mouth like a pacifier! The only time he barked was from glee to play fetch with a ball outside. I have not been able to take him to the beach yet as he was recently neutered, but he seems to like water.

What Bruno's Rescue Rep Says: We are thrilled with the opportunity to find this guy a new home where he will be properly cared for and given the chance to thrive -- inside a home with his people.  Bruno would best be an only dog given his resource (toy) guarding when another dog is around.  Bruno needs a human companion who will take him on many walks and hikes.  Ideal dog for a single person who needs an affectionate and attentive buddy.  May be okay with cats.  Bruno will be a dedicated and trusted sidekick for many adventures.  Would benefit from work with a trainer to resolve his toy-guarding behavior.

Medical: Bruno is recently-neutered, current on vaccinations, and microchipped.  He is currently recovering from kennel cough.  The fur on his hind quarters and tail is recovering from past flea dermatitis.

Our volunteers donate their personal time phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
