Bullwinkle ~8-year-old, neutered male black Lab/hound mix, 52 lbs
Background: Found as a stray on the streets of Contra Costa County, he came to the shelter very underweight. The shelter named him "Bullwinkle". No one came to claim him... and his time almost ran out at the shelter. A local dog rescue advocate told us about him, and we jumped at the opportunity to get him out of the shelter and into a foster home enroute a permanent forever home.
What Bullwinkle's Foster Says: In the classic late-’50s/early-’60s cartoon, Bullwinkle J. Moose stars with Rocky the Squirrel. Rocky is the brains, while Bullwinkle is the heart. He is friendly, lovable with an unshakeable optimism, and loyal to the core. Zero strategy, but pure intentions. He’s brave. Not because he understands the danger, but because he doesn’t let it stop him. He’ll walk straight into anything with a smile, say something like “This looks dangerous, Rocky,” and then… keeps going.
Inspired by his forebear, GGLRR’s Bullwinkle has been recovering like a champ after being dealt a bad hand. He has started eating again to keep up with his food-motivated older foster brother Wilbur, also a GGLRR rescue from years ago. Potty-trained, not crate-trained. Sleeps quietly in our bedroom on the floor on his bed. Gentle, makes great eye contact, loves to have his ears pet, leans in for snuggles, barks rarely, and sleeps a lot. Enjoys being at home with his people. Content with 1-2 short walks a day. Not leash trained but isn’t too much of a puller. Easily redirected. Could benefit from learning some basic commands like sit, down, stay, come. Bullwinkle is friendly and curious to know all visitors.
Right now, Bullwinkle is still sleeping a lot. Sometimes he needs to be nudged to get up to eat & go for exercise. (Maybe this will change as he continues to heal.) He’s still learning how to navigate stairs, doorways, and sidewalks. Our daughter commented with affection yesterday: “it’s as if Bullwinkle grew up on another planet”. When we see other dogs on the street, Bullwinkle wants to meet & greet. He waits long after they’ve passed to see if they might change their minds to come back and get to know each other more. Endearingly messy eater. Maybe in a previous life he ate out of a bucket in a barn or back yard. Our dog Wilbur is always happy to do a modest clean up. Don’t know about cats. Likes car rides, looks like he’s crossing the Delaware in the back seat. Bullwinkle is a gem and puts a smile on our face every day caring for him.
What Bullwinkle's Rescue Rep Says: Looking for a forever home with minimal steps/stairs. Presence of another dog would be fine. A calm quiet home would be best for him. One or two neighborhood walks per day would be great for Bullwinkle. Would fine for a family with kids.
Medical: Current on vaccinations, microchipped, and neutered. Clearly, Bullwinkle needs to put on some weight -- should be around 75 pounds. He is recovering from aspirate pneumonia (not contagious)... and an ear infection.
Located In: Portola Valley.
