Canelo - 1.5 YEAR OLD, MALE GOLDEN RED LAB, 70 Pounds, Needs to be Neutered
Background: Canelo's family lost their housing and were unable to find a home that accepted large dogs. Canelo lived in the backyard with another German Shepherd and was also socialized with a small Terrier mix who lived indoors.
What Canelo's Foster Says: Canelo is a very sweet boy that has been an outside dog his young life so we are working on getting him used to the rules indoors. He has peed twice inside but I believe he is quickly learning that’s a no-no.
He is getting better at not counter surfing each day as well. In true Lab fashion, he is constantly searching for food. He eats pretty fast so he will need a dog bowl that requires him to slow down. He is walked twice a day, or I will run him with our other dog on leash and he does well. He has a lot of energy and requires someone to take him on daily walks. We are also working on his pulling habits while walking and there is some improvement but he’s still not where he needs to be. He sleeps on a dog bed at night inside and does very well. He usually doesn’t wake up but if he does, he lays next to his bed for a short period and then back to his bed for the rest of the evening. He would be great with other dogs (I currently have four other dogs in the house) and there are no issues with any of them. One last thing, he did jump over the four foot side of the fence, so a higher fence is needed in his forever home. What Canelo's Rescue Rep Says: Canelo is a friendly, social boy who greeted both me and my husband with a wagging tail and immediately ran to grab a toy.
He allowed full handling and was eager to play fetch. We spent a few hours with him at our home before taking him to the vet and meeting up with his foster. Though he was understandably nervous after a long car ride, Canelo perked up as soon as he saw our three dogs. We did find fleas on him, and he let me give him a bath without issue. He was hesitant to get into the car, but once inside, he rode quietly and settled well. Because Canelo was primarily an outside dog and didn’t receive a lot of socialization outside of his immediate family, he's best suited for experienced dog owners. Canelo will thrive in a home where he’ll be treated as a true member of the family and receive plenty of exercise, consistent structure, and basic obedience training. He’s still working on housetraining, so his new family should be patient and ready to support him through that. Canelo would likely enjoy living with another friendly dog (or dogs), as he seems to enjoy canine company. He may not be the best fit for households with toddlers or babies, as he tends to get jumpy when he's excited. Ideally, we’re looking for a home where Canelo won’t be left alone for long periods, one with a secure backyard where he can stretch his legs, and a person or family with an active lifestyle committed to helping him reach his full potential.Medical: Canelo is in good overall health and still needs to be neutered. He has some mild skin irritation and thinning fur on his lower back, likely caused by fleas. With regular baths and ongoing flea and tick prevention, his skin and coat should improve quickly.
