Cody 12 Months Old Male Black Lab Mix, 75 lbs, Will be neutered in May
at fair

Background: Cody was an owner-surrender from San Jose after his human became homeless and was living out of her car. Cody was given to her from a friend when he was about 6 months old. She said Cody is a Lab and Golden Retriever mix. However, we think he might be mixed with Shepherd. She described Cody as friendly towards people, children, and other dogs.

What Cody's Foster Says: Cody is a 75 lb lap dog. He is still a big floppy puppy that wants you to shower him with affection, scratches, and belly rubs. Lots of energy. Loves to play, especially fetching a ball or toy. He will bring it right back to you. He is very smart. Very sweet temperament. Just wants to be next to you getting pets and trying to climb onto your lap. Not crate trained, working on off, down, and drop commands. He's still mouthy during play. Cody does not have any leash aggression and is curious of cats and other dogs. I would not recommend small children only because he does not know his size and can be jumpy. He sleeps well through the night in our room with a closed door. He needs a nice sized yard to romp and play. He'd be ideal as a running or hiking buddy. He needs someone who will interact with him, often, as he's still young and requires attention.

What Rescue Rep Says: My husband and I met Cody's previous owner, her adult daughter, and 4-year old grandson at a local park with a dog park connected to it. Cody was friendly, allowed all over handling, and did jump on us a couple of times but nothing excessive. He pulled on leash in his excitement to be out and did well in a fenced-in area, off leash, sniffing, exploring, and wagging. He met a few other dogs in the dog park section and did very well. When one started following him around and growling, even though Cody ignored him and continued on mingling with the other dogs, we thought it best to leave.

Cody did well at a visit to the vet. He was a little mouthy when the vet was touching his paws. Cody appears to be a big puppy. At first glance, I thought he was older than 12 months, but observing some of his behavior, it seems in line with his age. Cody would thrive in a home where he's a valued member of the family, one where he will receive adequate exercise and basic obedience training. He'd likely do well with another dog and children, although because he jumps and can be mouthy in play, he might be better fitted with older children/teens. He would benefit from an active family and home where he won't be left alone very much and one committed to his training.

Medical: Cody is in good health, up to date on Rabies and DHPP, heartworm negative, microchipped and will be neutered in May.

Our volunteers donate their personal time phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
