COOPER - 2 Year-Old Tan Male Lab/Pointer Mix 57 Pounds, Neutered
Background: Cooper came to us after being found as a stray in Monterey County and brought to a local shelter in mid-June. Upon meeting Cooper, we saw a Lab mixed with Pointer. The shelter laughed and said they had initially reached out to a Pointer rescue for Cooper, and they said he was more Lab than Pointer. In any event, we were happy to welcome Cooper into the Lab Rescue family.
What Cooper's Foster Says: Cooper is a goofy puppy who is coming to terms with living in a stable environment.
Cooper does not interact with dog toys, or inappropriate human possessions, save for a rubber treat dispenser.
I have not found an environment that Cooper cannot feel relaxed in; he integrates well with other dogs for outings, and social gatherings.
He lives to hunt for rodents, and I suspect any smallish animals. Cats are a no for him, but it’s more about chasing anything that runs more than hating cats.
Cooper has been living his best life with around 2 walks a day, including trips to dog friendly venues. He loves the dog door out to the backyard, enabling where the occasional squirrel is still spotted.
He has been around children and is pretty aloof around them.
Cooper is interested in other dogs, will engage in play, and is good in a group.
I have left Cooper alone both in a crate and roaming free in the house. He is not destructive, but from watching a video feed, he is not happy about it. While this anxiety has been decreasing, I still do not like leaving him for more than 4 hours at a time.
Cooper needs an active family that appreciates his Pointer nature of following his nose, and not retrieving, and has the patience to work on his leash skills.
He still has episodes of being timid when exposed to new things e.g. shies away/retreats from Bully sticks and a dried anchovy. Me yelling at my computer because I inadvertently deleted an email I'd been working on has also caused this behaviour.
But mainly, what Cooper needs when everything else is exhausted in the day, just someone to cuddle with.
What Cooper's Rescue Rep Says:Meeting Cooper at the shelter, we found him quietly standing at the front of his kennel. He was easy to leash up and just as easy to walk out to the outside yard. One of Cooper's neighbors was a barker, and Cooper did start barking after his neighbor started barking at him. He met two dogs, a male Terrier and a female Shepherd mix. He did well with both, and preferred to keep his distance from the younger, more rambunctious female Shepherd mix. Cooper is a pretty easygoing guy who is at his happiest when he's right by your side. Apart from a natural urge to chase critters and cats—likely the Pointer in him—he's a relaxed companion. We’re looking for a loving home where he won't be left alone for long stretches, but instead treated as a true, cherished member of the family who gets included in all of life's activities and outings. Overall, Cooper enjoys the outdoors, hanging out with people, and socializing with other dogs. He would do best paired with a family that offers a calmer social environment rather than a loud or chaotic household.
Medical: Cooper is up to date with Rabies and Distemper/Parvo vaccines,, heartworm tested (-), microchipped, and is neutered. Cooper arrived with a mild heart murmur, so we had an echocardiogram done to get a full picture.
Great news—he has a mild case of subaortic stenosis (SAS)! Because Cooper is already 2 years old, his condition is at its peak and won't worsen. What does this mean for his future? He can run, play, and live a completely normal, healthy, happy doggy life just like any other pup!
