Holly, 3-year-old female black Lab/Shepherd mix, 60 lbs Not yet spayed

Background: Holly’s story began with uncertainty. She arrived at a Modesto shelter as a stray, and after spending two frightening weeks there, she gave birth to 11 beautiful puppies. A busy shelter is no place for a new mom, so we welcomed Holly and her babies into foster care, where they could finally feel safe.

What Holly's Foster Says When Holly first arrived (with her puppies), she was understandably terrified. As soon as she stepped out of the car, she tried to run away. We don’t know what her life was like before she came to us, but it was clear she had learned that the world wasn’t always kind. Despite her fear, Holly proved to be an incredible mother. She devoted herself completely to her puppies, caring for them with endless love and patience. She trusted us to handle both her and her babies from day one, never showing aggression or concern. At first, Holly preferred to stay close to her puppies, retreating to her bed whenever we spoke to her. Little by little, her confidence grew. She began venturing into the house, accepting gentle pets, and eventually choosing to relax nearby. Every day brought a small victory. Today, most of her shyness has melted away. She even gets the occasional case of the zoomies and carries around a toy. She is still quite averse to being on a leash; so that is a major work-in-progress.

What the Rescue Rep Says: Holly is looking for a patient adopter who will continue helping her build confidence. She is still learning that people are safe, practicing her house manners, and becoming comfortable walking on a leash. She’s a naturally calm, gentle soul who would thrive in a peaceful home and doesn’t seem to need an especially active lifestyle. Because she’s still gaining confidence, Holly would do best with older, respectful children who understand that trust takes time. In return, you’ll have the privilege of watching a sweet, resilient dog continue to blossom into the companion she was always meant to be. If you’re looking for a quiet, loving dog and are willing to let her move at her own pace, Holly will reward your patience with a bond that’s truly special.

Medical: In good health. Holly is current on vaccinations and heartworm negative. She is microchipped. Not yet spayed.

Our volunteers donate their personal time phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
