Honeybee 3-year-old female chocolate Lab mix 60-lbs Not yet spayed

Background: "Honeybee" was brought into the Modesto shelter on 16 July by a field officer. Per the activity report, Honeybee was at a fire department and getting in the way of operations, an animal control officer arrived to pick her up and bring her safely to the shelter. It was noted upon intake that she appeared to be pregnant. On 28 July this beautiful girl Honeybee brought her four puppies into the world, in a noisy shelter kennel. We brought them all into the Lab Rescue program in early August and placed them in a Tiburon foster home where she has been the most outstanding mama dog nursing her puppies.

What Foster Says: Incredibly intelligent, sensitive, eager to please the person(s) she's connected to. Very chill. In very little time learned to pee/poop in designated area, come, sit and patiently wait for food. Takes treats very gently. Now knows not to counter surf. Will look in garbage for anything edible. Buries high value toys/treats like bully stick. Amazing hearing despite ear infections. Wants to hunt gophers/rats for sure. Not completely housebroken. Loyal, loving, skilled mom. Gentle. Soulful. Patient. Loves to be petted, snuggled, curl up on couch with people. Definitely a snuggler. Loves head/ear scratches and belly rubs. A little touchy about her hind quarters; nothing aggressive, just can tell she's more sensitive to rump rubs. Soulful eyes and truly a very special dog. Does not like bath, and does not like squeaky toy sound.

Not a barker, but will bark to protect pups. Quite alert to sirens, kids screaming in neighborhood, construction sounds, but not alarmed by them. Quite alert and always doing "security rounds" of the yard and house making sure everyone is accounted for. Good with kids (though she hasn't been exposed to little ones under around 10 y/o) all of whom have been fairly calm and have prior dog experience. Seems like she would be an outstanding fit for someone with space for her to run (and dig), but also be right by the person's side. She definitely has bonded with me and prefers that I be around. Has done some stress chewing/digging at carpets, etc. when I'm away. Not an over-eater. does prefer gourmet food.

What Rescue Rep Says: Mama Honeybee has done a spectacular job nursing her four puppies. Time for her to head to her very own forever home... and take a permanent vacation from puppy duties. Will need training on how to walk on a leash. Would be fine in a home with children. No idea how she is with cats. We have not yet exposed her to other dogs given her focus on nursing her puppies.

Medical: Honeybee is in good health; albeit dealing with a long-standing ear infection that we are currently working on. We will work with her adopter to get her spayed a month after she is done nursing her puppies. She is current on vaccinations and microchipped. Heartworm test pending.

Our volunteers donate their personal time phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
