Jake 11-year-old male black Lab, 100 lbs Neutered

Background: Jake originally belonged to his current caretaker's dad, who became ill, and Jake is now living with the daughter. She loves Jake dearly but cannot give him the time and attention he deserves while caring for her father and managing her own large dog. Jake is ready for a home where he can be the center of someone’s attention again.

What Jake's Owner Says: Jake is your typical Lab: docile yet energetic. Loves to lie at your feet. House-broken. Jake spends the day inside the house. Sleeps at night on a dog bed in my bedroom. He not alone very much during the day. He gets a 30-minute walk each evening. Jake has lived with other dogs. Likes to ride in the care. Pulls on the leash a bit. Pretty good recall. Fine with cats -- once he gets to know the cat, he is fine with the cat; doesn't pay it any attention. Loves to fetch although the arthritis in his back legs limits that. Would do best in an adult home, older children... with people around a lot of the time. Deserves lots of attention.

What Our Evaluator Says: A sweet senior Lab with a heart of gold. Jake greets the world with a full‑wag tail and a gentle, easy-going spirit. He currently weighs about 100 pounds and would benefit from shedding 20+ pounds, especially since he has a bit of arthritis in his rear legs. Even so, Jake moves through life with that classic Lab enthusiasm and a warm, steady presence. Jake has a wonderful temperament. He grew up around young kids, dogs, and cats, and he remains calm and friendly with animals he meets. When a couple of dogs passed by on the street, he showed no interest, and when a cat walked by, he was politely curious. He knows Sit, Stay, and Come, and because he’s very food‑motivated, he’ll be an eager student for any additional leash training. This sweet boy showed no signs of resource guarding when offered food, and he takes treats gently from your hand. He does not display separation anxiety, and he enjoys riding in the car—always a bonus for a Lab who loves being part of the adventure.

What Jake's Rescue Rep Says: Jake is a kind, steady, loving dog who simply needs a home where he can receive consistent care, gentle guidance, and plenty of affection. He will make a loyal, loving companion for the right family.

Medical: RNo health issues besides the arthritis in his back legs. Jake is current on Rabies and Distemper vax. Neutered, microchipped, and heartworm negative.

Our volunteers donate their personal time phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
