Lucy: 3 year-old spayed female black Lab mix, 104 lbs
Background: This sweet happy girl was adopted from the shelter in fall 2024 by a blind woman who lives in a pet-friendly apartment complex for disabled senior citizens. It's clear that other residents of the complex are fond of Lucy, we got lots of friendly hellos and greetings as I was walking the halls with Lucy and sitting with her in the building lobby. Her owner gave Lucy lots of love and attention, but sadly came to the realization that she can't provide the kind of home that a large breed dog needs. Lucy didn’t get out for regular walks and her exercise was limited to playing with toys and fetch inside the apartment. Not surprisingly, Lucy became rather overweight. GGLRR has moved Lucy to a foster home where she is now enjoying having access to a backyard to explore.
What Lucy's Foster Says: She’s a little chubby right now but Lucy is a sweetheart of a dog. She is very calm and well behaved in the house. She can be left alone for several hours with no problem. Lucy is adjusting to being in a new place with just a few anxiety whines now and then but some cuddles do the trick. She’s a cuddle bug and likes to lay at your feet. She is totally house trained, just show her where she is supposed to go outside. She is not at all destructive and perfect when left alone for 2-3 hours. I leave her with Kong or a small bone often but she is good either way. She’s much calmer than your typical 3 year old Lab.
What Lucy's Rescue Rep Says: Lucy is a big strong girl and surprisingly nimble for her size. She hasn't had a lot of recent leash walking experience and can pull some on leash or stand and plant when she is nervous about going somewhere. She would enjoy having a fenced backyard to play fetch and run around in and this would be a great way for her to start getting used to a higher activity level.
Lucy's former owner said that Lucy can be reactive to other dogs (but is getting better) and likes to chase small dogs. Lucy has also shown some prey drive and was quick enough to catch and dispatch a rodent in the yard at a foster home. So a home without any small dogs, cats, or chickens would be best. Lucy did well meeting my large stuffed Labrador and remained calm in the presence of other dogs (both small and large) when I took her to a pet store vet clinic for vaccinations. We were told that Lucy’s original home (before she was surrendered to the shelter) had multiple dogs that did not all get along. So we think it might be nice if Lucy was the only dog in her new home. Lucy hasn’t been out and about much the last year and can get nervous when encountering new situations but looks to her human for guidance. She’ll need a patient owner willing to take things slow and give her time to adjust. Lucy is a sweet happy girl who loves belly rubs and playing with toys. She’ll bring a lot of love and joy and cuddles to your home. It will be great to see her transformation with a chance to lead a healthier lifestyle. Lucy will make a wonderful companion.Medical: Lucy is spayed, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, on preventatives, with a recent well check vet visit. She’s already started to lose some of her excess weight since moving to a foster home.
Located In: San Jose (thru Jan 4) then Petaluma.
