Max 2-year-old Male Yellow Lab, ~89 lbs, Neutered

Background: TMax made his way to Lab Rescue from a shelter in Santa Cruz after his previous family surrendered him due to their inability to provide the attention and exercise he needed. He was initially acquired from a breeder at 8 weeks of age by the family's adult son. When the son moved out and couldn't take Max with him, Max was left with his two disabled parents. There, he was confined to the backyard day and night, sleeping in an outdoor kennel. Since the adult son left, Max did not leave the property for walks.

Max previously lived with another dog and got along well with him/her. He has been around children aged 3 and up. Max enjoys playing fetch and going to the beach, although he hasn’t been there in some time. He is friendly with strangers, likes bones, and has had some training. While he can be startled by water from a hose, he loves the ocean at the beach. Max is very strong.

What Max's Foster Says: Max is a friendly, loving, and energetic 2-year-old with a playful nature. He enjoys fetching balls, rolling in mud puddles, and drinking from the faucet. Max is a strong chewer, so antlers are best for him, while softer toys like stuffed animals and tennis balls don’t last long. He sometimes tries to avoid us when we reach for his collar to attach the leash. Although he might be a bit overweight, he is quick for his size and we have walked him up to 4 miles. Max has not been left alone during his time with us. He sleeps quietly through the night in a crate in our bedroom, and barks briefly when he hears noises but settles down quickly. He greets us with jumps but relaxes shortly thereafter.

What Peanut's Rescue Rep Says: A volunteer evaluated Max and described him as energetic, active, and eager to please. Max’s tendency to jump may make him less suitable for households with small children until he receives proper training. He would thrive with an active individual, couple, or family. Max does not show any resource guarding behaviors. Although he initially jumped on the fence when he was first let out of the kennel and a few times during the evaluation, he is otherwise a great dog. He has a high energy level and would benefit from a home where he won’t be left alone for long periods and one where he will be an active member of the family. Since arriving into our program, Max has made significant progress adapting to indoor living. He should not be placed in a home with cats, as he has been chasing the fosters' cats. We are in the process of moving him to a new foster home due to this reason.

Medical: Max is up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, neutered, and heartworm negative.

Our volunteers donate their personal time phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
