Shadow, 7-months old male, Black Lab, Not neutered

Background: Shadow's owners are struggling to train him and give him the time and attention he deserves. .

What Current Owner Says We love this little guy, but we are in over our heads. We got him via Petfinder.com (from someone in Manteca) when he was just a puppy. Shadow is definitely silly and super curious. LOVES people. Will ask for cuddles, for maybe 2 minutes... and then he's off to find something to do. Makes the funniest faces when he's surprised or shocked. Has the sweetest face when he is super tired and just wants you hold his face in your palm for a little bit. He is house-broken and crate-trained. Shadow has been to 4 or 5 puppy socialization classes and when he was at board-and-train and he lives with another dog.

Shadow broke one of the toes on his front right foot... and he is currently wearing a splint/cast on that foot as he heals. We currently play gentle tug twice a day about 10-15 mins each time; can't do too much because of foot restrictions. Before his injury, we would take him on walks, parks and he was learning how to fetch. He is high energy, currently struggling to settle down properly and needs someone who can have the time and attention to train him. He needs proper obedience training. He lives with a small dog and he is very respectful of her space. He just really loves people, people make him really happy and excited. He has a fractured toe, has been on a splint and cast for about 3 weeks already. Limited from running, jumping and he has to stay as mellow as possible. He has about another 2 weeks with the splint until he gets off of it and just has a soft cast on, he also has to get his bandages changed every week and get a check-up to make sure it is healing properly. Also on medication, Gabapentin capsule 400mg :1 every 8 hours and Acepromazine tablets 25mg: 1 every 8 hours.

What Rescue Rep Says Our evaluator found Shadow to be a sweet, sweet puppy... energetic and affectionate. He knows many commands. His owners have done a good job with training and enrichment for him... but their lack of access to a yard is tough for this active puppy. Shadow tends to jump up on people in friendly excitement so not ideal for family with small children or someone unsteady on their feet. Would be great in a home with an existing dog. No prior experience with cats, but we suspect he would be fine in a hoe with a cat.

Medical: Shadow is very healthy. His right foot is recovering and we expect full recovery with no lingering issues. Current on vaccinations and taking heartworm preventive. We will get him to our vet for a full check-up and examination of that healing toe. Still needs to be neutered and microchipped.

Our volunteers donate their personal time and phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
