1-year-old 50-lb spayed female black Lab mix "Summer"

Background: Summer languished at a central valley shelter for 9 weeks (after being found as a stray) and was scheduled to be euthanized a week ago.  {She was originally named "Welsummer" by the shelter staff.)  A good Samaritan in San Jose notified us of the situation and we worked with the shelter to pull the dog and get the dog to the good Sam for emergency fostering.  We shifted Summer to a new foster when Summer got in a scuffle with the good Sam's existing dog.  The current foster is struggling to handle Summer due to her unbridled energy and pulling on leash.

What Summer's Current Foster Says: Summer is a smart 50-lb 1-year-old energetic young Lab mix (with Pointer or Doberman?)  We became her foster two weeks ago and are still getting to know her.  Summer knows "sit", "stay", "come" (still working on "down").  She responds well to treats and encouragement.  She is very sweet; loves people she knows, wants to please.  She willingly sleeps in her crate through the night (she also likes to sleep in a dog bed).  Summer enjoys morning and evening walks but pulls and needs additional leash training.  She has not been introduced to other dogs by us but we believe she will be fine based on input from another temporary foster.  Summer can be a bit skittish and fearful but that is improving.  For some reason she does not want to get into our SUV but we are working on that.  She loves being petted, especially while lying on her back.  She enjoys running fast in our backyard, loves chasing tennis balls, brings them back to the thrower and usually drops them when so requested.  Summer playfully bites and mouths when she gets excited but stops when forcefully commanded and when given a toy to chew or when we walk away so she knows biting is not ok.  She has chewed a portion of a doggy bed but not her toys, bedding, towels, shoes, etc.  She does not like kibble but will eat it when mixed with wet dog food.  She has barked at strangers in the backyard when she is inside our house. She does not bark at strangers when she goes on walks.  She infrequently will jump up but stops when told to do so - same for putting her paws on a sofa or counter.  Summer is a loveable, smart puppy who want to please, is trainable and will make a great family addition.

What Summer's Rescue Rep Says: Summer needs time to decompress and recover from her traumatic shelter time.  We need to get her into a new foster home with no other dogs (or cats).  Needs a secure backyard where she can run and relax and re-learn how to play and enjoy life.  She is crate trained.  Loves to play with plush toys.  Loves to be petted and given affection by her humans.  Nice leash-walks in the neighborhood will be awesome for her.  We will provide all of the needed supplies to care for her.  Summer will need slow and steady introductions to other dogs as she is quite excited when she sees another dog.

Medical: Summer is in fine health.  Spayed, microchipped, vaccinated.  Summer is missing her tail -- not sure how that happened.

Our volunteers donate their personal time phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
