THOR - Almost 3.5 years old, Male Yellow Lab, 85 Pounds, Neutered

Background: Thor's owners need to rehome him and two of their other Labs due to his mom's health issues which have made it difficult to properly care for them. Thor and the other two Labs are housed in outdoor kennels in the backyard. They are all friendly dogs in need of training.

What Thor's Foster Says: If you are looking for a goofball with a heart of gold and an eager demeanor to please and cuddle, then look no further as Thor is the dog for you. His name is very misleading as he is anything but Thor like. Thor is your typical energetic Labrador who does well with our friendly retrievers. He is highly energetic and will require regular exercise and would thrive in a home with high energy and active dogs. Thor is always game for fetch, he brings the ball back to you and patiently waits for his turn while tip tapping out of pure excitement! He also LOVES swimming and will not hesitate to jump in any swimmable water bodies! He loves belly rubs, head scratches and hugs, once you’ve had a Thor hug, you can’t not fall in love with him!

Underneath his goofy exterior, he is genuinely a very smart dog! He used to be an outside dog in his past life, but within only a week of staying with us, he has not had a single accident inside the home! He also mimics and picks up traits from our Labrador so in a way, he has been training himself! While he is the perfect, cuddly, energetic Labrador who just wants to be your best friend, he would not do well if left alone for long stretches of time.

Thor is also apprehensive of strangers initially (especially if they catch him off guard during walks) or if there is a nearby dog, but does absolutely perfectly once he gets a proper introduction and some time. Daily positive reinforcement training will help him overcome his initial anxiety in no time!

What Rescue Rep Says: Thor initially greeted us with some light "woofs" and was a little cautious of us as he was next to his dad. It didn't take him long to warm up to us. Thor lived with two other Labs — the mom to his son and his son — and got along well with them. He was exposed to one of the Chihuahuas in the home. There was also an indoor/outdoor cat that he seemed indifferent towards while sometimes curious and would bark at him.

Thor's learning what it means to be a real dog for the first time. Having spent most of his life as a backyard dog, the world is still a little big and noisy for him—he's come a long way while in foster care. Once he knows you, he’s incredibly loyal and affectionate.

He is still learning the ropes of leash walking and can be reactive when he feels overwhelmed, so we’re looking for a home with someone steady on their feet and familiar with dogs that need patience, space, and guidance. He’d thrive in a quieter environment—probably not a city dog. He does well with other dogs and would likely benefit from the company of a canine buddy or two to show him the ropes and help build his confidence. Because Thor was an outside dog, he's best suited for experienced dog owners who are familiar with Labrador Retrievers and will allow him the time and space to acclimate to new surroundings as he was pretty undersocialized. Thor will thrive in a home where he can be part of the family and receive consistent guidance and basic obedience training. Thor could do well with older kids. He may not be the best fit for households with toddlers or babies, as he can be jumpy when excited. Ideally, we’re looking for a home where he won’t be left alone for long stretches during the day, a home with a backyard with room for Thor to roam, and a family committed to his training. Thor loves the water and is ball obsessed! He enjoys playing fetch and is very agile. He would do well with an active family and could potentially make a great running partner.

Medical: Thor is up to date with Rabies, DHPP, heartworm tested (negative), microchipped, and neutered.

Our volunteers donate their personal time phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
