Tigger: 1 year-old neutered male black Lab mix, 46 lbs
Background: This handsome boy was literally bouncing off the walls with stress at the shelter so GGLRR swooped in to get him to a foster home where he could decompress and relax. He is turning out to be a very sweet and wonderful dog, though it seems like he hasn’t had much life experience and much of the world seems new to him. The shelter had him listed as 1 year old though we think he could be slightly younger.
What Tigger's foster says: Tigger, unlike his name, is a very calm dog. He is nervous as it appears things are new to him. He cowers when you reach too quickly for his head to pet him or for his collar, though he is getting more comfortable with me doing it. I am walking him with a harness and he does pull slightly. It appeared that he knew zero commands, but he does know Sit and Come however hesitant to do them as it seems like they were not rewarding activities in his previous life. The first 8 hours I had him, he would not walk through a doorway, so we had to carry him. Without squirming, he allowed different people to pick him up and carry him into the house. Now he has gotten used to my house and goes in and out my doors with ease.
Tigger goes into his crate without issue and sleeps quietly through the night. Tigger voluntarily spends lots of time in his bedded crate. If there is motion in the house, he comes quickly to investigate. He also is kept in the crate when I leave my home, but I have left for an hour allowing him to roam the house and he is fine. He has not chewed on anything and he is potty trained. During the day he just hangs with me in the computer room.
He has met both small and large dogs without any problems. We have not had any playdates yet, but he walks fine with a neighbor's boxer. He allows me to pet him everywhere and did very well at VIP when getting a heartworm test.
He has shown only slight interest in toys. But he keeps a soft toy nearby and chewed on it to make it squeak. I am hoping that once he becomes more comfortable with me and the new surroundings, he will become more playful. He is now just starting to wag his (short) tail when I come home after being out. He does better with praise then discipline as I think he had a harsh early months.
What Rescue Rep Says Tigger is settling in nicely at his foster home and starting to come out of his shell. He’s going to make a great companion for an adopter who can take things slowly and give him time to get comfortable in new situations. Tigger looks to his human for guidance and direction, which is a great quality for a dog to have. He enjoys running around in the yard (even in the rain) and wants to play chase. He’s not (yet) much of a cuddler, preferring just to hang out with you rather than needing to be in your lap. We think he might do best in a home that is on the quieter side. We haven’t had him around cats but he seems the kind of dog that would be inclined to chase them. Tigger is a happy, smart, and well behaved dog - he’s a Good Boy!
Medical: Tigger is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm negative, and on preventative. We don’t know why his tail is short, but it doesn’t seem to bother him.
