Yolo 6-month-old male black Lab mix 55-lbs Neutered
Background: We received a call from Yolo County Animal Shelter in mid-August: "We have a super sweet young male Lab that has possible pelvic and/or hip fracture(s). He came in as a stray with hundreds of ticks on him." Yikes! We immediately got him to an emergency vet who determined he did not have any fracture or dislocation. He was treated to rid him of all the ticks. But he was unwilling to stand on his back legs, and further medical treatment found a bacterial infection on his right leg. Several days of hospitalization care appear to have nursed him back to health and he is now able to stand up on his back legs and move about -- still a bit unsteady on his feet, but so much better then when he first joined our program.
What Yolo's Foster Says:Yolo is a sweet, gentle soul. He's very affectionate and attentive, but not needy. He's a mellow puppy who generally does fine when left alone. His day typically starts out with a hearty breakfast, followed by a short walk. He enjoys playing with the resident dog, then settles down to chew on a plushie or a bone. The afternoons typically involve another round of play or seeking out fallen fruit in the garden. Yolo enjoys an early dinner followed by some training activities and an evening walk where he drinks in all of the wonderful smells in the neighborhood. He loves all the people he's met and gets along well with other dogs. He would thrive in a home with another playful, gentle dog. Cats are unknown. Yolo is house trained, but he never does his "business" on his walks, so it's best if he has ready access to toilet outside. His only bad habit? Chewing on papers left on the floor or in the trash can. Yolo seems to have carpal laxity (my diagnosis), which we expect he will outgrow. He's already gotten much better in the four weeks I've had him.
What Yolo's Rescue Rep Says:Yolo is a darling pup. Affectionate, playful, friendly. Would do fine in a home with another dog or cat or kids. We believe he is crate trained. May need some work on house-training.
Medical: Current on vaccinations and microchipped. Negative for heartworm. Skin has pretty much recovered from the tick infestation. He will need some ongoing rehabilitation (light exercise, walking, leg massage) to continue his recovery.
