Yoshi: 6 y/o male yellow Lab, 75 lbs, neutered

Background: Yoshi’s family has owned him since he was 5 months old. Over the past few years, their lives have become busier with a toddler and the recent arrival of a newborn infant. Yoshi does very well with the young children in the home. Juggling the time demands of having two young children with busy work schedules have caused the family to realize that they just don’t have the capacity currently to get Yoshi the exercise and attention that he needs. They have also become less comfortable walking Yoshi in their neighborhood after some new dogs moved in who Yoshi doesn’t like (and the other dogs don’t like him).

What Yoshi's Owner Says: Yoshi is a golden hearted, yellow Labrador who loves to be in on the action. Whether you are having visitors over, or are playing with your kids or a group of dogs are having a tussle - he would run over and love to introduce himself. He is very food motivated and easy to train with consistent efforts. Yoshi is great with our kids.

As he has gotten older Yoshi has gotten more selective about dogs that he likes and has initiated scuffles with some other large dogs that he didn’t like. He is fine with small dogs and still enjoys playing with his Lab friends.

What Lab Rescue Says: Yoshi is a wonderful dog with many of the classic Labrador traits that we all love and he will be a friendly, devoted, and loyal companion. He is very mellow and chill around the house, though he still loves playing rough and tumble with his dog friends. As he has gotten older, Yoshi has gotten more selective about the dogs that he likes, and tends to make his feelings known when he is not feeling comfortable with a strange dog.

We recently moved Yoshi to a foster home where he is doing very well. He ignores most of the dogs that they see on walks, and he has also done well and walked together with several new dogs he has met. In a few instances Yoshi growled and lunged at a dog at first, but became more comfortable as they spent time together and did parallel and front/back walking. In other instances, we decided that it just wasn’t a good dog for Yoshi to meet.

Yoshi is probably not a dog park dog at this point, though he would love having regular playdates with some close dog friends. He does very well and loves playing with the other dogs that he knows at a home based boarding facility that his prior family used while traveling (and the boarding owners love having Yoshi stay with them). Yoshi however, had to stop attending another daycare facility that his prior family used when Yoshi went after another dog on a few occasions. So it all just depends.

We are looking for a dog savvy adopter for Yoshi who understands that a dog's sociability can vary with the other dog and the circumstances. Yoshi is a strong dog so you’ll need to feel comfortable that you can control him should you encounter another dog that he doesn’t like on a walk. He walks very well for our foster using a front attach harness that fits him well and doesn’t pull too much.

Yoshi is a sweet happy joyous dog who is great with people and loves to play. He’s an energetic dog but is mellow in the house as long as he gets regular exercise. He can be a bit stubborn at times but patience and persistence work well with him. Yoshi is crate trained and enjoys hanging out in his crate as a den. He is fine when left home alone for a few hours, though he may bark and whine a bit at first. He likes to swim and enjoys going to the beach.

Medical: Yoshi is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, with a recent negative heartworm test and is on preventatives. He is currently being treated for a minor ear infection. Yoshi’s top left side of teeth haven't come out (since birth). The owner’s vet said it was fine and it doesn't hinder/bother his lifestyle in any way. He also has a blocked left tear duct on the left side which doesn’t bother him.

Our volunteers donate their personal time phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
